Multiplicity in Bollywood films | ||
Priyanka Chopra was very close to setting a record with her 12 uniquely different characters in Ashutosh Gowarikar's Whats Your Rashee? The actress, who has garnered a lot of publicity for the film said that her work in WYR could never be compared to the greats in the past who portrayed multiple characters. StarBoxOffice ventures back in time.

Amitabh Bachchan – Mahaan (1983) Amitabh Bachchan has played several double roles in the past but in Mahaan, Big B played triple roles as effortlessly as the earlier. He played a lawyer who turns into a criminal and when ages plays an inspector and a singer. While the audiences felt the story of Mahaan wasn't as different as the countless films made in the past, they did appreciate the effort Bachchan put into his characters. |
Madhuri Dixit – Gajagamini (2000) M.F Hussain was eagerly waiting to work with his muse Madhuri Dixit. The film Gaja Gamini while artistically appreciated didn't cause any ripples at the box office. Gaja Gamini (Madhuri) appears as four characters, one of them being Sangeeta, a blind girl from Banaras, who inspires village women. Shakuntala, who is the subject of Kalidas poem of the same name, Mona Lisa during the Renaissance, and finally Monika, the woman of the New Millennium. |
Govinda – Aunty No. 1 (1998), Hadh Kardi Aapne (2000) While both films were as dull as the other, Govinda pulled off the Eddy Murphy stint in The Nutty Professor in his own fun and quirky way. Govinda put on the garb of his father, mother, brother and sister in both films along with the role of an elderly Aunty in Aunty No1 with the help of a lot of over the top garish make-up and clothes. It was good for a couple of laughs and that's about it. |
Abhishek Bachchan – Rani Mukherji – Bunty aur Babli Abhishek and Rani play two small timers from small towns who come to the big city by way of conning people out of their big stash-cash. Both these actors, in a desi version of Bonnie and Clyde take on every imaginable impersonation to dupe people. He becomes a sarkari man in a politician's office to a lout selling Taj Mahal. She plays moll, uber rich socialite, and even a sadhvi to camp away with the booty of the rich. |
Paresh Rawal – Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! (2008) The black comedy received a lot of appreciation with Paresh Rawal playing three equally different roles in the film. First he played Abhay Deol's surd father, then entertainer Gogi Bhai and the conniving Dr. Handa. Paresh had the audience in splits with all three avatars and moulded himself into the character magnificently. |
Kamal Hassan – Dasavathaaram (2008 Tamil; 2009 Hindi dub) Kamal Haasan came very close to Priyanka but missed by two characters in Dashavatar. The film did very well down south and Kamal was lauded for his portrayals. He played the ten roles as follows, Rangaraja Nambi, Govindarajan Ramaswamy, George Bush, Avtaar Singh, Christian Fletcher, Shinghen Narahasi, Krishnaveni, Vincent Poovaraagan, Kalifullah Mukhtaar and Balram Naidu. While the film did very well down south with Mallika and Asin, it didn't garner the same response in Bollywood. |
