Upcoming telly show Bairi Piya has already generated interest among telly viewers for its subject.
A still from Bairi Piya

Based on the real life horrifying incidents of farmer suicides in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, Bairi Piya that comes from Balaji Telefilms promises to highlight the severe problems faced by farmers in the recent years. Supriya Kumari, plays the protagonist, Amoli, an 18-year-old girl. Amoli is the object of desire of a wealthy village thakur who takes advantage of her under the pretense of saving her family from financial doom.

Although Supriya had heard about farmer suicides before, it was only after she came on board the project that she realised the seriousness of the issue. "This show will bring across the difficulties faced by the farmers. The aam junta needs to know why farmers are so poor. Why are they perpetually in debt is also something that the show aims at putting across," says Supriya, who was earlier seen in the serial Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo. "I was quite impressed when I heard the concept of the show. I just knew that I had to be a part of it. And after my first show, this was a great platform," she says.

Bairi Piya premieres on September 21 on Colors and will be on air Monday- Friday at 8.30 pm.

Sharad Kelkar is tired of playing it safe!
Sharad Kelkar

Before you jump to conclusions, let us tell you that the actor, who was last seen portraying the role of an upright and morally devoted husband and son, will soon be displaying his dark side on television.

Sharad will play the role of thakur Digvijay Bhadoria in Colors' new show Bairi Piya which begins tonight at 8.30 pm. Says Sharad about his role, "I am the antagonist in the show. Thakur Digvijay Bhadoria portrays the ideal husband, son and family man. He's rich and feared by the villagers. However, he is the man whose philandering ways get the protagonist of the show, Amoli, in trouble."

As for accepting a role with grey shades, he has this to say, "In order to grow as an actor, it is necessary that I keep pushing myself and try out new things. After my last stint, I was not working for almost six months. I had a few projects but all of them were more or less the kind of work I had already done. Bairi Piya was something different and exciting."

'I'm going with the flow'

Ekta Kapoor is stepping out of her trademark zone by bringing out a new serial on farmer suicides, called Bairi Piya. The Soap Queen talks about her new venture:

Is this show similar to Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo?

Poverty stricken homes in India are similar, so if you see a village setting in Maharashtra or UP, it'll tend to look similar. But if you see this show in detail, you'll see we have shot in actual locations. There is no question that it is identical to other shows.

How will people relate to the show?

This is a positive and honest attempt at something I have always wanted to do. I liked this story and so did the channel; they approved it in 15 minutes and I started work on it. I think, when you do something honestly, then people like it. I have been getting positive responses for the promos, so let's hope it stays that way."

Why this social issue?

Everyone has social issue in their mind and wants to do something about it. I wanted to do a show five months on child marriages; I did it and someone else also did it. Seven years ago, I thought of doing a show on the saas-bahu relationship; then I had a thought to do a show on cursed love, so I did Kasauti. It is just a thought and it can occur anytime. This thought came because of some articles I read about a girl being mortgaged and another one being sold legally. People live lives where these things are part of the norm.

Did you have a channel in mind for this show?

One thing I can tell you is that I called up Ashwini Yardi in the middle of the night and asked her if I could meet her the next morning and narrate a story to her, as I thought it was something she could do. She asked me why, and I replied that it was something I was doing for the first time, and wanted to know if it had the scope to become a show. I am dealing with rural India for the first time. I narrated the concept to her the next day and she loved it. So yes, I had this channel in mind.

Do you approach a channel with the strength of the Balaji brand?

A channel is under lots of pressure and so am I. I never used my brand; I always use my story. Channels often just give me a slot straightaway, but I tell them not to do that; I tell them 'Let me narrate the story and then you tell me whether you like it or not', because it is the show which makes the brand and not the brand that makes the show. If the show is good, it will help my brand. I'd rather sell a show in which I believe and create another feather in my cap.

What kind of businesswoman are you?

Cautious, but a risk-taker.

Farmer suicides are happening everywhere in India, so why base it in Maharashtra?

They are predominantly happening in Vidarbha and around here. There are lots of cases in other parts of India too, but the poorest farmers live in Maharashtra. The government is doing a lot for them, but red-tapism and money lenders charging exorbitant rates are ruining the farmers. Though the government gives them aid, it's the personal loans they have taken that they are not able to pay back.

You have been giving newcomers breaks in all yours shows, so why not now?

Till last week, I did not know that the girl who is playing Ameli (Supriya Kumari) has done Agle Janam... before this. I hadn't seen the show and, honestly, I wouldn't have taken her if I had known she was doing another show. I would have preferred it if she had been a fresh face, but it's okay, we will present her differently.

Are you keeping with the current trend of presenting social issues in daily soaps?

I think I am going with the flow, but a little faster. The show deals with rural India but it will have emotional angles too. I will try to explore it in my own way. I think this show is different because it has a story that goes beyond a poor village farmer's story into the lives of the people. The laws of attraction, love and relationships initially exist with the powerful and then the needy. You may be the biggest star in the world but you could be a slave to someone and have no control over that person.

Why did you decide to launch your show on amavas (September 18), an inauspicious day?

I asked them to change the day, but I guess they didn't have another date. I just did my amma's shradh. I have kept a roza also and an amavas fast. I keep rozas for 27 days every year. It was tough for me but I had to do it. I cannot break the fast during iftari as at 10pm I do the amavas puja. I will break it and go for namaz in the evening.

What is your explanation for the controversy over the auditions in which people had to kiss?

It is not under my purview. In any organisation, there are lots of people and each department is responsible for its own area of work. They are doing a cool show, and they had to ask people if they were willing to kiss on the show, but they kissed in the auditions only. I cannot say anymore because it has nothing to do with me.

Supriya Kumari is riding high as she bags the lead role in Balaji's new venture Bairi Piya on Colors. Ranchi ki rajkumari is working hard to get her dialogues right with the help of her directors and creative.

"It was a difficult process for me to read out the dialogues in Marathi, but my directors and creative team has helped me a lot. Now I am learning the language and enjoy speaking in the same dialect," says Supriya.

Elaborating on her role, the actress adds, "Amoli is happy in each and every situation. She thinks of her family first and can do anything for them. She treats her younger sister as her own daughter and is fearless person."

The actress is not only learning the Marathi language but also cooking. "Initially I never use to cook, as I had no interest but after staying in Mumbai for some time, I have realized the importance of the knowledge of cooking. Now I can cook for myself and so don't need to starve," she concludes.

Thus it is said Aae dil hai mushkil jeena yahan, so, zara bachke as yeh hai Mumbai meri jaan.

Small-town girl's big break

Supriya Kumari has bagged the lead role of Amoli in Ekta Kapoor's new show, Bairi Piya. The actress also plays Shanichari, a friend of Laali's, in Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo.

Thrilled to be working with Balaji Telefilms, the only production house she knew of, Supriya talks to us about her experiences till now:

How did you bag this role?
I got to know that Balaji Telefilms was conducting auditions for a show called Bairi Piya, and I went like I did for Agle Janam... I was shortlisted and we soon started shooting, and I am enjoying it.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am from Ranchi in Jharkhand. I am a Kathak dancer and received a scholarship from Delhi University. I am doing an Accounts Honours degree by correspondence; I will have to go back for my exams. I always wanted to be a dancer, but I auditioned for a short film on DD sometime back and I got the part. After doing the film, everyone told me to try acting.

I came to Mumbai 11 months ago. I miss my family – parents, two sisters and a brother – a lot, so I sometimes stay with my cousin here. I like to eat a lot, and have learnt to cook after coming here.

Is this new role similar to your earlier character?
Both characters belong to poor families, but there are many differences between them. Both Shanichari and Amoli deal with contradictory issues. But Amoli is capable of taking decisions, which Shanichari could never do. Shanichari was sold off and even her best friend Laali was not unaware of it.

Do you think there is too much poverty on TV?
For all these years we have been seeing opulent houses and lavish lifestyles. Now we are showing these issues because people need to know that, even though the government is making efforts, there is still poverty.

When Agle Janam... nobody knew that girls are still being sold in Bihar. So it is good that such issues are raised. I didn't know much before doing the show but I'm learning more about it now.

What is your character like?
Amoli is a very strong girl. She supports her parents and treats her younger sister like her daughter. She tries to keep everyone happy, even though she knows about her father's debts. She takes decision for her family. Eventually, she will have a romantic track, but you will have to wait for it.

Is it difficult to play this character?
While shooting for it, I've realised what it feels like to run on the road without chappals. I have learnt how to hide holes in your clothes. Every day, I learn something. At the auditions, I had only two-three Marathi dialogues, so my hair-and-makeup person helped me with that. I have never been to Vidarbha before. The unit members have helped me with the Marathi and researchers shared their experiences and told us what the problems are.

Ekta Kapoor to help Vidarbha farmers

After launching a new serial called Bairi Piya, which highlights the plight of farmers in Vidarbha, Ekta Kapoor now plans to start a nationwide charity drive for the debt-ridden people in this region.

She wants to help the farmers from Vidarbha, who are driven to suicide and selling off their daughters and wives to repay their debts.

"One news report about a farmer who sold off his daughter really disturbed me, and I decided to do something for such people. Women are being treated like cattle. I'm a woman too, so how can I not do something for them?" Ekta was quoted as saying.

While researching her show, Ekta found out more such shocking details. "Girls are also being mortgaged with stamp papers. The deed says that the girl will be with a person for a certain period of time and that the farmer will get a certain amount of money in return," she said. "This is like prostitution and no one is doing anything about it. We realise that the government has done a lot for farmers in debt but there are certain villages where help hasn't reached; we want to work in those areas."

The charity drive will take off from Vidarbha and travel to various cities across the country. Ekta added, "I've realised that doing a show is not enough to take up a social issue. I have to take my mission to the grassroots to actually help them. We might also join hands with the government officials and other local NGOs who are working in these areas."
