I wasn't the first choice: Shazahn
Readers will know Shazahn Padamsee as theatre personality Alyque Padamsee and singer Sharon Prabhakar's daughter, but the pretty 21-year-old isn't
exactly a stranger to the world of acting and arclights.
She's done her share of theatre and commercials, and now, Shazahn is all set to make her debut opposite Ranbir Kapoor in Yash Chopra's Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year. Sitting cross-legged in her Bandra home, Shazahn is all animated and smiles as she tells us how her 'dream came true'. "I had, in my own head, actually decided that if I ever become an actress, I would want to launch with this very production house. It was just a dream at that time. And then I got a call for this role and everything fell into place. It's a dream come true for me!" she gushes excitedly.
But a little birdie tells us that before Shazahn was approached, Genelia had refused this role. "I know they went through a lot of people before approaching me, that's a process in all films," admits Shazahn candidly, "I was not the first choice, but they liked me. It's a performance-oriented film and they were looking for somebody who suits the character." Tightlipped about her role or the film, Shazahn is even reluctant to speak about her co-star, the dishy Ranbir Kapoor. "He was really down to earth," she reveals after some hesitation, "You would think they will have so much attitude because they are stars but he was completely the opposite."
Another set of rumours doing the rounds is that Shazahn doesn't have a big role in the film. The actress doesn't deny it, but doesn't confirm it either. "I'm more than happy with what I've got," she defends her role, "I knew what I was getting into, my character and role were well-narrated and I knew the dimensions of the movie. Nowdays, the length doesn't define the role. It depends on performance, one can make a mark even in a small role.
Shazahn says she's super-ready for Bollywood — link-ups, competitions, rivalries et al! "Link-ups are a part and parcel of Hindi films," she says, sounding like a pro already. "I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Also depends on who I'm being linked with!" she laughs.
As for competition from contemporaries like Asin, Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor, Shazahn believes that each one is unique in their own way. "I'll let the public decide where I fit in," she adds. Her ultimate aim, says the newcomer, is to become a brand. "I'm more than ready, I want to be a star. I want to become a youth icon. The slot is filling up fast in Bollywood and I want to grab my place in it!"
