Chapter 1:
"Good Night, Good night! Parting is such sweet sorrow, that I shall say good night till it be morrow." That was the last line she read from the famous novel Romeo and Juliet when she closed the book. She rested her head against the headboard of her bed, the tears slowly spilling out of her eyes. "If only I could be assured to see you again tomorrow, would I find parting to be sweet sorrow." She spoke to no one in particular, and closed her eyes, letting the tears flow down her cheeks. She could feel her heart sinking, as she recollected the memories of her past. She seemed to curse that one day, which changed her life completely. Why did she ever have to be his friend? Maybe things would have turned out differently then. No one could imagine that a crush in school could turn out to be her first, and probably her last love. Despite the years that passed, she still couldn't forget him. "I love him'" and as those words escaped her mouth, she began crying uncontrollably.
-------------------------------
"You really need to stop doing that Nupur!" Tanvi said, looking straight at her friend. Nupur didn't bother to look up at Tanvi, and continued to stir her already cold coffee. Tanvi always hated Nupur's strange behavior. She hadn't seen someone as lifeless as her.
Tanvi gave up, and lifted her mug to take a sip of her own coffee. She placed it down on the table, and looked up at Nupur. "Are you going to drink it? Or do you wish to keep stirring that all day?" There was still no response.
"Nupur, you could have told Tanu that you wanted cold coffee, not hot!" Aditya said, pulling out a chair for himself and seating himself between the two gorgeous ladies. Tanvi looked up at Aditya and greeted him with a warm smile, while Nupur still had no reaction. Aditya looked confused, and looked at Nupur. "Hi Nupur" he said.
There was still no response. "I think it is good etiquettes that when someone greets you, you greet them back." He pointed out. He waited patiently for Nupur to react, but she still didn't. Aditya waved his hand in front of her eyes. "Nupur, where are you?"
Nupur slowly raised her head up to look at him. He looked really worried. Nupur simply sighed and managed a timid smile. "Hi Adi" her voice was near to a whisper. She could feel Aditya's scrutinizing gaze on her and sighed inwardly. He knew her just too well. Count on him to catch every little secret of hers. She slowly met his gaze, and sighed again. "Shoot, Adi!"
"What is wrong with you?" he asked, his gaze still fixed on her. "Is something troubling you?" he could notice Nupur's sore eyes and looked really concerned. "Were you crying again?"
Nupur didn't know how to react. He always caught her, no matter how hard she tried. Nupur slowly nodded her head in defeat. She knew that lying wasn't going to help her.
"Just a little."
"Just a little?" Tanvi muttered in disbelief. "Nupur, look at you! You look like you've cried an ocean of tears!"
"Fine" Nupur muttered angrily. "Can't any damn thing go unnoticed by you at least for once? You catch me all the time!"
"Nupur, it never did and never will. Why are you doing this to yourself? You are crying over something that's happened ten years ago!" Aditya said, looking at her with a concerned look. "You know, sometimes its better if you move on in life. Don't hold yourself back."
"Oh forget it Adi, we've had this discussion with her numerous times, but she never seems to understand." Tanvi cut in, looking at Nupur indignantly. Seeing Nupur that way, she softened her expression. "Nupur, you know, there's this saying- Don't worry about the people in your past; there's a reason they didn't make it your future." "See, it only means that, just forget him! He never really was your perfect guy, so why cry over spilt milk?"
Nupur simply shook her head. "Tanvi, life is beyond sayings. It's really hard to let go sometimes." She looked back at her coffee.
"Okay, aren't we getting a little too philosophical? And Nupur, you really need to get yourself a fresh cup of coffee." Aditya interrupted, trying to lighten up the atmosphere. Nupur looked at him and smiled. If there was someone who could make her smile, it was Aditya. Aditya noticed Nupur smiling, and instantly smiled back. "Wow, Nupur, you look all the more stunning when you're smiling."
"Stop flirting Adi." Nupur laughed and then punched him lightly on his shoulder. Aditya leaned in closer to her to give her a side hug. He slowly gave her a peck on the cheek, and got up the moment Nupur seemed ready to yell at him. But surprisingly, she only laughed at his childish behavior.
-----------------
"So, this was the cause for your breaking down?" Tanvi asked, holding up the Romeo and Juliet book, giving inquisitive glances to Nupur. "How many times do you intend to read this anyway?"
Nupur was still in her cabin, rummaging through her files, choosing to ignore Tanvi's constant nagging. Tanvi always nagged her to stop reading Romeo and Juliet, but Nupur only seemed to get too attached to the book as time passed. She simply shook her head, and continued looking through the files.
"Nupur, I am talking to you, not the walls!" Tanvi protested, when she didn't get the answer to her question. She disliked being ignored. And Nupur did that too often. "And anyway, the walls have been more patient listeners than you yourself. Humph!"
Nupur turned around to look at her scowling friend. "Tanvi, haven't you got the answer to that question already a dozen times?"
"But why can't you ever take my piece of advice seriously?" Tanvi asked, the scowl still not disappearing. "I'm sure you have that book by-heart by now!"
"Tanvi, your advices are way too difficult and philosophical for my liking. When have you given me real piece of advice?" Nupur chuckled. Tanvi simply scowled back. But whatever it was, Nupur loved her dearly and was grateful to her for everything she did for her.
-------------------------
Nupur threw herself on to the couch, and closed her eyes for a few minutes after the long and hectic day at work. She suddenly opened them on hearing the door bell. She walked up to the door, and opened it, only to see a letter lying at her doorstep. She slowly picked it up. It looked like an invitation of some sort. She opened it, and was surprised beyond words. It was an invitation to her school reunion. The list of invitees was attached too. Nupur scrolled her finger through the names, and abruptly stopped on one name. Her heart skipped a beat as she read it aloud. "Mayank Sharma". Mayank Sharma would be there too. She would be seeing him after ten whole years. That gave her a very different feel. She would be seeing the person she loved after such a long gap. Nupur stared at the name over and over again. This was the most pleasant surprise she could ever receive. But what she didn't know was that, this sudden encounter would change her life completely, again.
