Should public transport in India be privatised?

BEST - Well the BEST is doing a fine job, no doubt. They carry out their task well. But their drivers and conductors just need better training for road manners and for interacting with customers. This sector can be untouched. I think there is a limit for the number of buses in the city and the BEST doesn't just keep dumping buses on to the road. Moreover, if a BEST breaks down, there is quick and reliable service for it.

I would love to see the SPECIAL LANES for the BEST buses. It will reduce travelling time and save fuel too. As for the Starbus - let them sort out the problems that the Starbus is having, everyday I see 3-4 Starbuses being towed away after they breakdown in the middle of their journey.

Autorickshaws - The Autorickshaws are the worst ever. No safety. No manners, including road manners. RUBBISH RICKSHAWS!!!! They make the same sound as a RX100 with Proton silencer. They are much better than BEST's for cutting lanes, breaking traffic rules, moving like a worm in traffic jams eventually making the situation worse. And to top it all, rickshaw production just continues and everyday there are soooo many rickshaws dumped on the road ONLY to add up to the traffic. Wait for a rickshaw strike and you'll understand why we need to limit their numbers.
Reason - Bajaj Monopoly!!!

One advantage of a rickshaw is that it can get you from point A to point B in a considerably less time. And another good thing is that they are all converted to CNG, a much cleaner fuel. But its also a wierd thing, even though they use CNG they keep increasing their rates. Like fuel prices, rickshaw prices just keep rocketing. But its still cheaper than a taxi.

Railways - They badly need to be privatised. This is the most dangerous transport in India (maybe the world too). The trains are outdated. There is no safety measures for passengers. You'll see a lot of people hanging out of the train or even sitting above it. Some people die crossing the tracks too, and BLAME the train for hitting them!! Among these, you can also get pickpocketed, raped, robbed or even killed inside a train. There is absolutely no comfort. There is no meaning of the 1st class compartment except for soft seats for your buttocks and lesser crowd. We need better trains!! Sector should be privatised.

I think Vijay Mallya were ready to take over but Indian railways is a gold mine for the government, it earns lot of revenues so i doubt it would ever be privatised, THANKS TO OUR CORRUPTED POLITICIANS.

actually both the things have pro and cons.
if privatized then the prices will go high and poor people will not be able to afford it.
if not then all the things u said. but i guess that will happen ultimately.

Yes it is true both will have pro's and con but if it is privatised than it would have more pro's than con's. It be more safer and comfortable to travel plus you will get better service and the price of fares will also reduce too.

But the Indian Government is reluctant to make the Indian Railway private, the service is very poor and it is not even safe.

nice topic. The public transport in most cities in India is deplorable. Mumbai is still better.

A private company is in business to provide bottom line profits to the investors. The government exists to provide service to the public.

Privatization may seem like a solution to pitfalls in government run services, but is not the most ideal alternative. Without the government the Indian railroad system could have been like the United States.

The status of domestic flights is more than deplorable, but the country has a skeletal railways system and resists investment in the building railroads on par with Europe and Asia. The highway system is great, and one can drive cross country in record times, but I'd rather have curled up in sleeper compartment than drive to NOLA.

Indian railways does something. I'm glad that with Konkan railway I can get from Bombay to Goa faster without having to change trains at Miraj. Perhaps Indians find it a problem, but I find Indian railways to be much more comfortable, convenient, cost effective and even safe in comparison to domestic flights in USA.

Sure thing there are no stowaways traveling on the wings of the plane, but by the time we take off from O'Hare my knees will be dead by lack of circulation, and by the grace of God the take off the same day it was scheduled. In fact I am confident that I can race any domestic flight from O'Hare into the rest of the Midwest.

Also when I travel by Indian Railways I do not have to pay half my ticket price for baggage check in. If there are delays I do not have to stew in tin can full of strangers. I can at least get a breath of fresh air, and buy some human consumable food.

Seriously after enduring domestic private air travel in the United States, when I visit India next I am going to hug a train and almost make out with one. Cause perhaps for an Indian, Indian railways must be a deplorable thing, but from here the thought of an Indian train makes me fall in love.

Public Sector who are already profit making should not be privatise, and why it should be ? best eg: Indian Railway/Airways...Government wants to see those type employee who are not interested in his works give V.R.S. or compulsory retire😊
Govt have some responsiblities to help/give the best to ordinery peoples..It is nonsense to assume that a private company will be better managed than a public one. Each has their own pressures.....the GOVERN_MENT is supposed to "govern" not run businesses as simple as that.😊

u mean to say govt. should give everything for free to people now. free travel all around the country? we have special fares for seniors, special trains for SC/ST at the time of dikhsha bhumi.

if they wont make profit then how will they provide welfare. for providing welfare also they need money. and concluding that people from govt. sector dont work and from private sectors work is a myth.
