LOS ANGELES: The star of the cult television series Baywatch and Knight Rider, David Hasselhoff is divorcing his wife of 16 years, his publicist told AFP on Friday.
The tousle-haired small-screen icon, 53, has filed papers seeking to end his long marriage to actress Pamela Bach, the mother of the couple's teenage daughters, Taylor-Ann, 15, and 13-year-old Hayley.
"David Hasselhoff and his wife Pamela Bach have decided to end their marriage due to irreconcilable differences, and he has filed for divorce," Hasselhoff's publicist, Judy Katz, said.
"The couple have agreed to an amicable settlement," Katz added.
Hasselhoff and Bach, 42, were married in December 1989 and have enjoyed one of Hollywood's longer unions.
Hasselhoff was married to actress Catherine Hickland for five years until their divorce in 1989.
The actor became world famous for his role as Michael Knight in the 1980s show Knight Rider, in which his co-star was a hyper-intelligent talking car.
He then went on to play California lifeguard Mitch Buchannon on the glamorous soap Baywatch, which began in 1989 and which he would executive produce.
After the show ended, Hasselhoff launched a successful music career in Europe and became a star in Germany, playing at a concert to celebrate the collapse of the Berlin Wall.
He is enjoying renewed popularity in Australia where he is a frontman for Pepsi Cola. Hasselhoff has struggled with alcoholism in recent years and checked into the Betty Ford Center in California in June 2002.
But in June 2004, he was arrested for drink driving in Los Angeles and pleaded no contest later that year. He was sentenced to three years' probation and his driver's license was revoked for 90 days.
