Very interesting observations, guys. You know, I have also wondered about this market for teleserials. Apparently the viewers are predominantly women, so apparently all the content is supposed to appeal to the common Indian woman -- and it totally doesn't. Is it supposed to appeal to them in the sense that the characters are so unrealistic and facing such a severe degree of "problems" that it becomes light-hearted and fun to watch? They must use some kind of reasoning like that to justify it. But you know, the TV shows create an audience as much as the audience creates a TV show. Otherwise there would never be anything new or different. These creatives have the ability to test the audience a little bit, or at least their perception of the audience, and experiment a little bit.
I used to think about this a lot while watching Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki - where Ekta Kapoor captalized on something similar, but also switched it up a bit. She would have the main protagonist be unpredictable and calculating in defeating her enemies. Of course her enemies were mostly unrealistic vamps with the exception of one character who kept changing from good to bad, bad to good, one extreme to another, but in a somewhat believable way for a viewer with an imagination.
I must watch Ladies Special. Will try Pavitra Rishta too.. please do recommend decent shows. My brain will surely fry if I attempt another viewing of Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyann. And I am so tired of reality TV shows.
