Shivratri in Shravan Month
Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi of each month is observed by Shiva devotees as Shivaratri. This falls a day or two before Amavasi or new moon day. The Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi day in Shravan or Sawan month is of great importance. Millions of people visit Shiva shrines on the day in North India and special Gangajal Abhishekam is performed. In 2009, the date of Shivratri in Shravan month is July 20 as per traditional Hindi Calendar followed in North India.
The popular Mahashivratri is observed on Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi in February or March. Staunch Shiva devotees observe it on all months in a year and it is known as Masa Shivaratri.
In Shravana month all days are dedicated to Shiva and the important days to Shiva like Masa Shivratri and Mondays are even more auspicious. Special pujas are held in famous temples like Kashi Vishwanath and Deoghar Badrinath Dham.
People make offering of Gangajal, bilva leaves, honey and milk. Shivling in the temples are continuously bathed in Gangajal. Kanwarias in large numbers carry Gangajal (holy water from Ganges) to Shiva shrines and to bathe Shivling in their home.
