The second season of Indian Idol has been going through a gender debate. Ever since the channel began airing the promos, viewers have been wondering whether a female contestant will be crowned the Indian Idol this time round, after Abhijit Sawant's victory last season. However, the male contestants have been trying hard to retain the title.
This love-hate relationship will find expression in tonight's episode when the girls and boys get into a war of sorts, trying to bag the first chance of performing in the gala round.
It may be recalled that the contestants had got into a similar gender debate just before the launch of piano rounds. At that time, cricketer Zaheer Khan had come to the rescue of the contestants by suggesting, as a cricketer is wont to suggest, a coin toss. The boys won the toss then.
This time the story is no different and the contestants have decided to go through a round of Antakshari to settle who will sing first in the gala round.
Says a source on the sets, "The 12 contestants will be divided into two groups each, headed by hosts Aman Verma and Mini Mathur, respectively. Although the girls will begin with 'I am the best', the boys will finally win the game."
It looks like luck is on the side of the boys. Incidentally, the boys had their way at piano rounds and also at the gala rounds. But the question still remains whether they'll be able to win the title too.
On the war between the two genders, Tarun Katial, SET EVP and business head, says, "Indian Idol 2 has a better representation of female contestants vis--vis Indian Idol 1. We decided upon settling the issue through Antakshari because this is a music-based show."
