I can take the rain on the roof of this empty house
That don't bother me
I can take a few tears now and then and just let them out
"Chahat, if you don't come here now… I am going to make sure we do not get ice cream again." Heer was tired of running after her daughter, who had just turned five.
Chahat stopped running and went back towards her mom, "Mom, it's not fair."
"Oh yeah, and you making me run after you all over the place is?" Heer put the jacket around her arms. "Drink this milk."
"Mom, you know I hate milk. I am… what is the word?" Chahat was a quick learner and she caught onto new concepts too early.
Sometimes Heer wondered if it was good to be this smart at such a young age or was it better to learn slowly but surely, "Lactose intolerant. And no you are not because you eat ice cream and nothing happens to you."
"But, milk is just yucky." Chahat picked up and drank the milk nonetheless.
"Good girl." Heer picked up her backpack, "Now go the bus is outside. Either I or Sneha Di will pick you up today, okay?"
"Okay. Love you mama." Chahat said as she ran outside towards the bus.
"I love you, too" Heer called after her daughter. She glanced at the watch and started to clean up quickly. She had to catch the train in twenty minutes and she was running late as usual. She caught it in time but realized she had forgotten to take the umbrella and the monsoon season coming in, she just hoped that she would not get completely drenched.
I'm not afraid to cry every once in a while even though
Goin' on with you gone still upsets me
There are days every now and again I pretend I'm okay
But that's not what gets me
She finally found a seat in the train despite the crowd. As she gazed outside, she was the first drop of rain and though she worried about getting wet, she couldn't help herself from putting her out to feel the first drop of the season.
She smiled at the thought of Chahat and how much fun she would be having with her friends in the bus. Her daughter loved the rain, just like Prem had. Heer scolded herself, why did she always think about him? It was hard not to.
Her mornings began with praying for her daughter's and Prem's happiness and it ended with praying with her daughter for the same. The train came to a stop and Heer was glad to see the rain had slowed down giving her just enough time to walk to work. Heer was tired, she had worked extra shifts at her two jobs so that she could insure that her daughter went to the best school.
What hurts the most
Was being so close
And havin' so much to say
And watchin' you walk away
Even as she pretended that she was fine, everyday was a struggle. Usually she would involve herself in other people's lives so much that she would not have enough time to think about her own life. She arranged weddings, it was the best feeling in the world to see two people who loved each other become one. Every wedding reminded her of hers, not the actual wedding but the time when they had made those vows to each other. She smiled again thinking about the last time she felt one rather than little pieces that tried hard to look as if they were one.
And never knowin'
What could've been
And not seein' that lovin' you
Is what I was tryin' to do
Prem dialed the number one more time but it came busy. He wondered where Preet was, as they had to go for a meeting in less than ten minutes. Just then Preet walked in past the front doors, "Sorry Bhaiya, I got a little late because of the traffic."
"Let's go." Prem said as he turned around walking towards the door.
Preet hurried to catch up with his brother who was like the express train. Preet felt for Prem because he had closed the world around him. Preet had blamed his brother along with everyone else at the beginning but with time he had realized that his brother was blaming himself enough, he did not need more people to break him down even further.
Preet tried to joke around with Prem but rarely got a smile in return. The only time he had smiled was when Preet's daughter Gungun had been born. He had taken the little child in his arms and said "Her eyes are exactly like Meher's but the smile is like Heer's."
That was the first and last time he had mentioned Heer Bhabhi's name to anyone, even to himself. He ran away from it all so much but still every night he hoped that he would find Heer again.
It's hard to deal with the pain of losin' you everywhere I go
But I'm doin' it
It's hard to force that smile when I see our old friends and I'm alone
Still harder gettin' up, gettin' dressed, livin' with this regret
But I know if I could do it over
I would trade, give away all the words that I saved in my heart
That I left unspoken
Prem finished the meeting and then went away without making small talk. He walked past the doors and into his room. He buried himself with work, that was his only savior. There was nothing except emptiness in his life. When he was not working, he was thinking of his past. He hated going home, seeing how happy Preet and Meher were, how satisfied Maya and Harman had become with each other. He was happy for them but their happiness made him realize his one mistake every second. He wished he could go back..
What hurts the most
Is being so close
And havin' so much to say
(Much to say)
And watchin' you walk away
Every day he wished he hadn't let her walk away but she had asked him to, and he had to wish her feelings. But that did not stop him from thinking that she will be with him again, very soon. He had decided never to go to India again but he had no choice anymore. He had to go because it was Heer's parents 10th barsi and he had promised his father that he would go do all the pooja's along with Meher and Preet.
