I had started writing this small story a long time ago but hadn't finished it. I found it today as I cleaned my computer. Roger Federer inspired me to complete it finally and here is the finished product. Hope you like it!!!

Happy Birthday

Prachi had come home that Sunday after finishing some shopping. She was caught in the heavy rains and by the time she reached home it was already 9 p.m.

Opening the door of her apartment, Prachi had realized her husband Milind hadn't yet made it home. She had tried to contact him but the call went unanswered. With his hotel business booming, he had only become all the more busy these days and he often worked on Sundays too. She had known him for 10 years as a friend, 9 years as a lover and it had been over 2 years since she had become his other half in every sense. Though not much had changed in him in the one decade she had known him, there were times over the past year where she missed him though they were husband and wife, living in the same house. It all had to do with Milind's business being at its peak where he had taken up ambitious international projects. Nevertheless, Prachi was the happiest person on earth to witness her husband making great progress in his career and she had been his support system, being there for him in every way she could.

Taking a shower and changing into her night clothes, Prachi had tried calling Milind again that night. The call again went unanswered. But the very next moment, she had received a call from him where he had apologized for missing her calls and had said he will be home in an hour or so. He also had asked her to finish her dinner as he already had his.

Prachi had thrown the mobile in disappointment and anger hearing what her husband had said. She had expected him to come home early at least that day for it was her birthday the next day. All these years she had known him, he always spent the evening before her birthday with her, wanting to be the first one to wish her right when her birthday started after the stroke of midnight. During the initial years of their relationship, Milind used to call her and keep her phone busy from 11 30 p.m. to well over 12, not allowing anyone else to wish her before him. Then came the times, where he would drop into her house with a cake and he wouldn't leave her house until the cake is cut in the midnight, though she had indicated to him that her father might not appreciate it. On her first birthday after wedding, they were on their honeymoon in London, and Milind had made it the most special birthday in her life. Her last birthday too had been a memorable one as he had come to her office
the evening before her birthday, where she worked as a chartered accountant. He had taken her to a movie and bought her numerous gifts and further surprised her with the cake he had baked for her at home.

The past few days had been extremely busy for Milind. However, Prachi had hoped he would surely remember her birthday and celebrate it the way he did all these years. However, to think that he hadn't come home that day though it was already over 9 p.m, Prachi had been feeling down. Now that Milind had told her he had finished his dinner already, Prachi had felt no mood to eat her dinner alone. Though she had warmed up the food that was remaining from the last night, she had washed her hands after eating merely two spoons. She hadn't seen him baking a cake or doing anything that gave her a hint that he hadn't forgotten her birthday and it had almost broken her heart. She had checked the fridge, wardrobes and all possible places she could think of, wondering if he was hiding some surprise for her, but she didn't come across anything that hinted some celebration. However, thinking that he must have gone shopping for a cake for her and that's why he was late that night, Prachi had still kept her hopes high.

The doorbell rang at 10 30 p.m. and Prachi had ran to open the door. At the door was her husband drenched in rain.

"Hey, sweetie. Sorry, I got so late. Had to finish Mr. Kapoor's project." said Milind as he came inside the house. "How come you got drenched so much?" said Prachi getting a towel for him and started drying his head.

"You know the rains in Mumbai. It showers when you least expect. I have a slight headache. Could you please make me a cup of ginger tea? I will take a quick shower by then" said Milind going inside the bathroom.

Preparing tea for her husband, Prachi had felt disappointed to see that her husband hadn't got a cake or anything else for her birthday. Still hoping that he hadn't forgotten her birthday and he would at least wish her, Prachi had poured the tea into two cups. "How was your day, sweetie? Did you have your dinner?" Milind had said standing behind her in the kitchen enveloping her in his arms. Prachi had turned around to say "Yes, I had my dinner. And it was a lazy Sunday, just did some shopping. Your tea is ready."

"Are you drinking tea too?" asked Milind noticing two cups of tea and knowing Prachi never liked to drink tea. Prachi had nodded her head for a yes.

Milind had sipped his tea relaxing on the sofa in the living room. Prachi had sat by him turning the pages of a magazine aimlessly. It was well over 11 p.m. by then and Prachi had anticipated him to say something regarding her birthday. Milind had swtiched the TV on to get updates on the French Open tennis tournament he had been following. He had sounded elated to hear Roger Federer, his favourite player, winning his 14th Grand Slam which was also his first Roland Garros title. "Awesome" saying so, Milind had yet again given Prachi an account on why he believes Roger is a class apart.

Hearing all possible praising adjectives for Roger Federer from her husband's mouth but no hint of him remembering her birthday, Prachi had started feeling low almost believing he had forgotten the anniversary of her birth. A few minutes later, Milind had switched the TV off to say "let's sleep sweetie. I have to wake up early tomorrow. Have a meeting at 9. Monday morning!!" Milind had yawned.

"Oh Milind, your Sundays too have become Mondays these days. By the way, are you not forgetting something?"
said Prachi unable to hold her disappointment anymore.

"Hmm, yes. I did forget to kiss you as I entered home. I was totally drenched, you see." Milind had said picking Prachi in his arms and walking towards the bedroom.

"Bring me down, Milind" Prachi had protested. Milnd had put her down but it was only on the bed. Not allowing her a minute to compose herself, he had pinned her to the bed interlacing her fingers in his and kissing her neckline.

"Milind, let me go." Prachi had turned her face away not allowing his lips to reach hers.

"Why, sweetie? Are you not in the mood today?"
Milind had questioned innocently.

"Don't call me sweetie, when you have forgotten..." Prachi had not finished her sentence.

Milind had suddenly moved away. Sitting on the bed, Milind had asked her "What's the matter? What is it I have forgotten?"

"Don't you remember?"
said Prachi, sitting up, facing him.

"What? Please tell me straight, rather than going in circles"

"What's the date today, Milind?"

"Today is 7th of June. Is there anything special today other than the French Open.."

"You remember the dates for French Open, but not..."
Prachi had tears in her eyes.

"Oh No, it's your birthday tomorrow. Why did it slip out of my mind? Oh, I am so sorry, sweetie" said Milind banging his head.

"Milind, did you really forget?" asked Prachi will her eyes completely filled now.

"I am so sorry, dear. Somehow I forgot, wait, let me go out and get you a cake."

"No need now. It's so late and it's raining heavy"

"No, I will get it" Milind took out his jeans from the wardrobe and started wearing it.

"Please, Milind. It's alright. No bakery would be open now. It's raining really heavy. Let's just sleep now. Tomorrow is Monday. I too need to go to office early."

"Darling, I am feeling so bad. I should have remembered your birthday. Please forgive me. Wait a minute, let me bake a cake for you"

"Milind, please. It's okay. No need to bake the cake. It will be tomorrow by the time you finish."

"But, sweetie. I am not feeling good at all. How unthoughtful I am! How could I forget your birthday! Shit!!" Milind had cursed himself.

"It's alright, Milind. I am not a baby to be celebrating birthdays every year. I am going to be 27 now."

"But Prachi.."

"Let's sleep, Milind. It's perfectly okay. I am seriously not feeling bad." Prachi had tried her best to hide her disappointment and tears.

"I am so sorry, dear. I will take you out for dinner tomorrow night"
said Milind getting into the bed. Prachi had wished him good night and turned her back to him, secretly wiping her tears. Milind too had turned to the other side pulling the comforter over them. Noticing that her husband didn't even hug her, Prachi had felt all the more sad but left out a deep breath to let her pain go away. Composing herself after a few minutes, Prachi had turned to look at her husband and she was all the more disappointed to see him snoring slightly, already turning away from her.

Prachi had silently cried and after sometime, her tired eyes gave into not so sound sleep.

"Happy birthday, sweetie"
Prachi had heard Milind's voice and also felt a tingling sensation on her lips. Milind's lips and tongue were playing with her lips. It was five minutes before the 7th of June was going to become the 8th.

"Milind"
Prachi got out of her sleep completely and Milind had caught her lips in a deep, passionate kiss prompting her to respond equally. Then he had suddenly let her lips free and got out of the bed. Prachi had got up and sat on the bed to see the room lit up with dim light of candles. As she got out of the bed, she saw a cake on the table with candles burning on it.

"Milind" Prachi's eyes had shined. Milind had swtiched the lights on. Prachi had found a bunch of red roses, her favorite cartoon character Winnie the Pooh soft toy and a few gift boxes on the table, besides the cake. She had looked at her husband with tears filling up in her eyes again, but this time the happy ones. Milind had opened his arms for her and she had run into them. As she hiccupped in his arms, Milind had said victoriously "I fooled you to believe that I forgot your birthday. Hehee".

"I am sorry" said Prachi looking at him with a sweet smile on her face.

"Why sorry? I should be sorry for making you cry, that too the day before your birthday. My poor wife was crying silent tears and believe me, it wasn't easy for me to ignore you like that."

"I am really sorry for thinking you had forgotten my birthday. Since you have celebrated all my birthdays ever since I have known you, not seeing any preparation today, my heart sank. I even had searched every corner of the house to find out if you have any surprise for me. But I couldn't find any. Where had you hidden all this?"

"I went out in the rains half an hour ago" Milind tightened his arms around her and laughed.

"I am sure that's not the case."

"Sweetie, I had come home when you went out for shopping and hid all these things in the attic in the bathroom"

"Bathroom?"

"I thought you wouldn't search in there at least! Do I not know you well?"

Prachi had hit Milind's chest with her fist in fake anger and hugged him tightly. "It's about time now to cut the cake" said Milind.

Prachi had blown the candles off and started cutting the cake. Her parents and her father in law, who lived in Pune and a couple of friends had called her on her mobile to wish her for her birthday, making her feel blessed that not only her husband but so many others were awake until 12 to wish her.

Prachi had cut the cake then and took a piece in her hand to feed it to her husband. Milind had taken the piece from her hand and fed it to her, kissing her on the forehead. "Happy birthday, my love. Many many happy returns of the day. I wish to celebrate your 100th birthday too like this and many more" Milind had hugged her. Prachi had thanked him with all her heart.

"Milind, the cake is delicious" Prachi had fed her husband a piece of the cake. A moment later, she had smelt the beautiful roses, hugged and kissed her Pooh and got busy opening the other gifts. Milind had got her a birthday card, a silk saree and a satin night dress. "WOW!" Prachi had said elated to see so many gifts for her.

"Do you not want to try your gift?"
Milind had said hinting at the satin night dress. "Sure" Prachi had flashed a bright smile and got busy changing into her new night dress right in front of her husband.

Milind had watched his wife undressing and then dressing in the black night dress and desire was awakened in every pore of his body.

Getting into her night gown, Prachi had felt her husband's eyes piercing her though she didn't meet with them. Feeling his gaze burning her body, her cheeks flamed. She had finally dared to meet his eyes but not able to withstand the assault of his covet, she had turned away playing with the piece of cake she hadn't finished. Milind had walked upto her, and held her hand, that had the piece of cake in it. Directing the piece to his mouth, he had made her place the cake between his lips, but soon he took his lips to hers along with the cake to share it with her, while his hand invaded her new night dress. The sharing business had extended beyond the cake as they forgot their individual selves and cherished each other's body, mind and soul that night. The night had also proved all the more special to them with a new life taking birth in Prachi's womb as a direct consequence of their loving and passionate union.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! Milind is so so cute!! ☺️☺️☺️ I wonder if there are men out there in the real world who would celebrate each and every birthday of their spouse, who put thought and care into making their partner's bday special...mmm! Milind really put on a convincing act, for a moment I too thought he had genuinely forgotten Prachi's birthday. Thanks Federer for inspiring Miss Shubs into given us this sweet one shot story.
