POOJA KANWAL TURNING A STAR IN SOUTH

By Aira - Eye TV India Bureau

Bollywood is an odd place for some it brings success overnight and for some who do get the right breaks and later become strugglers. But as they say, this world has a place for everyone - so does this industry. One such budding actress, Pooja Kanwal who had a dream launch at 17 with the Rajshri Banner's 'Uff Kya Jadoo Mohabbat Hai', is now becoming a star down south. Smashits caught up with her for some candid answers.

Let's start with your Kannada films first. What's happening there for you?

My first Kannada film '7 O clock' is about to release in February. It has some amazing music, and I am attracted to good music. But apart from my first release, it is the first time in the Kannada film industry that a new actress has signed two films with stars like Sudeep and Shivraj Kumar (son of Raj Kumar), before the release of my film. I will be doing 'Tirupati' with Sudeep and 'Gandana Mani' (Husba nd's house) with Shivraj Kumar. I am getting a whole lot of offers from there but I am taking it a little slow.

But why Kannada films?

click for larger view
I have been getting some offers from there and '7 o' Clock' has a heroin oriented script. Also everyone was new and welcomed me with open arms. And apart from that, it's nice to get some experience in a different film industry as well. Not that I have not been getting offers in Bollywood, but they are a little below my expectations. So, I am waiting for the right Hindi film to do and till then it's some Kannada film.

Doing a film in a different language must be a Herculean task. How do you manage to get the expressions and cross the language barrier?

click for larger view
I have become a parrot now. They write the dialogues in Roman for me. Once I get the dialogues, I write down the meaning, so that I understand where to give what expressions. Also it's quite difficult to react to someone, as you only learn your lines and expressions. But I ask the director the general sense of the scene and accordingly give expressions on my costars' dialogues. It's a very difficult mental process rather than being just a verbal thing. I think doing a film in another language makes you learn more that what you can learn in any acting class.

Coming to Hindi cinema, a whole lot of young actors like you have become very choosy about the films they do. What according to you is the right film for you?

click for larger view
I think, the industry is at a major changing phase now. They are different genres, different scripts that work. You have a 'Black' that's worked. 'No Entry' that hasn't. A hit an 'Iqbal' being liked. So there's no formula any more. And similarly even I don't have a formula. I want to do a film which will help me as an actress, in terms of my talent. The next Hindi film I sign I would like it to be something which challenges me and also projects me in the right way.

It's quite frustrating to hear 35 scripts and not sign even one. What keeps you going?

I'd be lying if I say that it's not frustrating. But I have gone through a whole lot of ups and downs. Ups for being launched by Rajshri, downs when the film didn't do well and the offers were not the right ones. But I do understand the stakes here which are huge. What keeps me going is the strength of believing in myself.

The 2008 Miss India Worldwide pageant started on February 18, 2008. The final round was held on February 23, 2008 at the Trade Route Convention Centre in Gauteng, South Africa.

Let's put our hands together for India's first miss India World wide, Shagun Sarabhai. She won the crown at Johannesburg on the 23rd OF FEB 2008 in the 17th year of the Pageant.

ANOTHER FEATHER IN OUR CAP!

Shagun Sarabhai - Miss India Worldwide India 2008 Shagun Sarabhai, a 20-year-old Mumbai homeopathy student who was crowned Miss India Worldwide at a gala banquet in Johannesburg in the early hours of Sunday morning. shagun had beat contestants from 17 other countries, the panel of judges rated their talent, dress sense in Eastern and Western wear, and answers to questions. Miss India Canada, Uppeka Jain, 24, was the first princes and SabihaHussain, 21, from the host country, was crowned second princess.

Shagun was very excited and said, "If offers come my way from Bollywood, I'm going to accept them, yes, but I'm also studying medicine and I'll definitely try to blend both," the winner said.

"It was a little harder for me because I arrived a bit later, but I've always said that hard work pays off and this has proved true," said Sarabhai, whose only nervous moment on stage was when the top three were about to be announced from a shortlist of ten finalists.

"The question and answer round is when you're so nervous because you're faced with so much uncertainty about what question the judges are going to throw at you and what sort of answer you're expected to give. The other parts I was quite confident about."

Crying uncontrollably for the first few minutes after being named the winner, the new Miss India Worldwide quickly regained her composure to pose for the large media contingent as her parents who had flown in specially to support her waited in the wings.

Mum Bella, a psychologist, and dad Pratesh, a homeopath were overjoyed at their daughter's success.

Sarabhai will be taking home with her a package of prizes that includes $5,000 in cash, gold and diamond jewellery, exclusive garments and a laptop computer.

Akshat and Pooja to drive Palampur Express

Sony channel's new show Palampur Express finally gets its lead actors who will drive this much awaited train. After Jay Bhanushali opted out of the show Akshat Gupta (last seen in Sangam) will play the role opposite the lead girl Pavni, who will be played by a South Indian actress Pooja Kanwal. The show is currently being shot in Mahabaleshwar.

A source from the sets informs, "Finding the lead girl for the show was very difficult but this search ended after we zeroed down on Pooja Kanwal. After a stint in South Indian films this will be her first Hindi television show. Right now we are shooting with Akshat. We will start shooting with Pooja very soon."

When asked about Akshat's Character he informed, "Akshat is playing Tej Sapru's son in the show. Tej Sapru is playing a MLA and Akshat has passed out of his college in the show. Audiences will see him as a dude in the show. There is a funny coincidence that Tej is Akshat's character name in the show and it's the real name of the actor (Tej Sapru) who plays his father in the show. Having him on the sets is fun."

We called producer Roshan Abbas to confirm about the actors in the show but he said, "I am sorry I cannot say anything at this point of time. Please wait for the right time and we will announce everything about the show."

Yeh show filmi hai!

Yeh show filmi hai!

While small-screen stars are making the transition to the big screen, it seems the scripts for Bollywood movies are finding their way to TV.
Still from Bhaskar Bharti and

Whether it's plots or characters, Hindi films seem to be providing some much-needed masala to television serials. The plot of Star Plus' Tujh Sang Preet Lagayi Sajana smacks of Subhash Ghai's film Saudagar. Jeevan Saatthi Humsafar Zindagi Ke on Colors is reminiscent of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.

Even the latest shows, Bhaskar Bharti, Ladies Special and Palampur Express on Sony Entertainment Television, have traces of Mr Ya Miss, Life... in a Metro and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, respectively.

But TV producers dismiss the allegation, saying there's no deliberate attempt to copy films. "There are a few ideas around which stories are built. So, the plots may seem similar. But that doesn't mean we're copying Hindi films," says Roshan Abbas, producer and conceptualiser, Palampur Express.

"It's possible that as the show moves on, you'll find it similar to Iqbal. That's because Indian cinema has explored so many themes that TV serials are looking like reflections of them. Hollywood films are so big that they can't be adapted as serial scripts. Bollywood should come up with such plots. Even Balika Vadhu was initially written as a film, but since that didn't work, it was turned into a serial," explains Roshan.

Some claim the stories on TV go beyond the original scripts. "We may take the idea from a film, but while a film is over in three hours, a serial goes on for a long time and needs a new twist every day. The presentation has to be strong enough to keep audiences from saying, 'I'd rather pick up a DVD and watch the movie'," says Deeya Singh, producer, Bhaskar Bharti.

Archita Biswas, scriptwriter of Tujh Sang Preet Lagayi Sajana, agrees. "Since Tujh Sang Preet Lagayi Sajana and Saudagar are about warring families, people might think the serial is based on the film. But we've introduced various new angles that weren't in the film."

Sapna Babul Ka... Bidaai, a hit serial on Star Plus, has increasingly begun to look like Vivah. But ask Rajan Shahi, the producer of the show, about it and he says, "If we blatantly copy, the shows would look forced. We have to keep viewers' interest alive or TRPs could fall."

As for Seeta Aur Geeta on NDTV Imagine, the producers have clarified that they have officially bought the rights to remake the film into a serial. "Our target audience is the youth and there are old films they wouldn't have watched. So, there's no harm in remaking them into serials, as long as the originals are given credit," says Sunil Bohra, producer, Seeta Aur Geeta. But will it get the same response as the film? "Our audiences are very entertainment-friendly. They will enjoy anything and any number of times if it comes for free," smiles Sunil.

Ajay To Quit Palampur Express..

Tagged with: Ajay Singh Chaudhary, Palampur Express, Sony entertainment television

Palampur express may come to a jarring stand halt, as Palampur boy Ajay has expressed his displeasure with the way serial is shaping up, so much so that he plans to quit the show.

"No doubt it's a beautiful concept, but the story at this juncture is going nowhere," laments the actor. He further states, "I am just waiting for the new twist that will be soon introduced in the serial, as told to us by the Creatives. If I like the twist, I will continue or else, I have made up my mind."

Even though he agrees to have made ample moolah with his stint in the two-months-old serial, but as an actor he does not see the scope to explore anything beyond what he is doing right now.

After 'Let's Dance' he is awaiting another film. Apparently, he seems to be enticed by the flashy silver screen over the lush greenery of Palampur!

Palampur Express's unexpected halt
Palampur Express has not been running on the preferred track, so there is a possibility the show might be derailed. The show has been drawing low TRP ratings; plus, lead actor Ajay Singh Choudhary has packed his bags and will be leaving the show soon. So the show might be pulled off air.
