AUKAD
On Friday, I gave you psychology not sociology...I should have given you both... today I would like to rectify that err.,,,
We live in a social world with class structures... that's reality whether we want to admit or not. And language/words are a system/means for representing social structure. Before moving forward with my analysis, let me introduce two sociology concepts - (1) Value Systems, and (2) Stratification Strutures.
Value Systems:Humans always hold ideas about what is good or bad, appropriate or inappropriate, and essential or unessential. There are values; and when these are organized into a system of standards or criteria for assessing moral worth and appropriateness of conduct, they constitute a value system.
Stratification Structures: When the valued resources of a society are distributed unequally and when, as a result, people can be categorized by virtue of their share of resources (i.e. money, power, etc.) and come to define themselves as dintinctive, a stratification system exists in a society.
I understand and appreciate many on IF are upset about Arjun's constant use of the word "Aukad" and dialogues of a similar nature. So, let me defend his use or abuse of that word. Why Aukad? The answer is obvious... there is a huge class difference between Arjun and Arohi. Most importantly he mistakenly believes that she was playing with his emotions because of his status (Aukad)....so, he needs to show her lack of status by rubbing it in her face verbally time and again. Beyond the obvious difference in social stratification.... They have divergent value systems.
Arjun appears to have cognitive dissonace even within his value system thanks to his lousy parents. He values humanity and kindness - he gets that from Savita. Even during the last episode he was donating money for cancer... he rescues puppies, send cars for strangers who need help, and re-vamps parks, and gives early retirement to employees. On the flipside, he is accutely aware of his status in society curtesy of DK... who has no doubt told him about the power of money and status time and again... that's why in his H & M mode u see him use the "I am Arjun Punj" card... like he did when he tried to have Antara arrested, when he was arrested, and now to Boss Arohi around and "torture" her... So, in sum he's got a conflicted value system where he has conflicting values - insaniyat and status. As such, it is not out of character, but in character for him to use words no doubt taught to him by his pithashri... words like "Aukad" when he believes the only reasons Arohi wants him is for his social strata - his Aukad... .
