I strongly believe that if the abuse went on with Khemi , she would have return to Nanaji's long time ago. As she is older, been around longer and seen more in life. Comparatively Santo had a bit guarded life by the elders in the family, she was not the one making any decisions for or in the Nanaji's place and it came naturally to her to take orders instead of give orders. Khemi more or lees the head of the family so it would not have been so dosile and quiet. Khemi would have been able to stand up for herself.

On the contrary,

Santo is the guarded one and not used to such behaviour .. she woud have run away quicker than Khemi .. !

When a person who is sheltered and has not face this situations, would be shocked and scared. She would not know how and what to do. She is also young and impressionable,making it easy to brake her self esteem. She is totally traumatized by the situation to make her own decisions.
