Opti,

You were bang on target with your thoughts!
Though I am not surprised by this...because DM never really accepted his marriage in the first place and being the patriarchal head of a village & a family, he probably sees subjugation as a way of life, rather than any rampant injustice that he might be meting out to his wife!
I think its a long, long way before DM begins accepting Santu as a woman who has her own needs, desire and ofcouse self-respect long before he realizes that its his duty to give her the actual rights of a wife, rather than just a place to live, food to eat and clothes to wear!
What DM needs is some serious self-introspection...he might not have love to give to his second wife, he might never have it in all probability...but what he can give her is genuine respect, care and dignity that every human being deserves, irrespective of that person's status in life!
Soapie

Couldn't agree with you more. The guy needs to know how to respect her as a human. He may not love her but letting her continue to live in the store room (and only consenting to have her in his bedroom for his old friend's sake) is a little too much. He can atleast house her in a decent room if not his own. He has not even bought her any clothes other that the two she came with. When he asked her how many clothes she came with, I thought he was intending to buy her some new clothes but turns out he wanted to know that so that he can pack his son's suitcase with the same number of clothes.
In some respects I feel Hiten is better than his father. Atleast the incongrousness of his father marrying a girl who is one third his age and tucking her away in a store room hit him.
I do respect DM's sense of righteousness in certain respects but he can be quite an MCP. His dialogues with his daughter underlined that. "Since when should a parent ask his daugher's consent for marriage?" or something to that effect.

HEY OPTI!! so glad the Kymth bandwagon is here! :D i think Santu will be the scapegoat by trying to listen the daughter out.....once DM finds that she had some role to play in potentially breaking the engagement...that'll be SOME day!!

Opti and Soapie,

You both are ABSOLUTELY right .. DM claims to be righteous .. and that he can do anythin to make things equal for everyone .. but the treatment meted out by him to Santo is really irritating .. I am not saying it's disappointing beacuse I dont expect his outlook to change so fast.. but something should trigger the change. NOW .
