It feels great! Fantastic, in fact. The obvious question was 'Why me?' But the answer was that in a short span, I had achieved much. As for the Ferragamo experience, I was the first Indian there after Indira Devi, the Maharani of Cooch Behar. I feel immortalised, almost!
To top it all, British entrepreneur Richard Branson is now keen to turn you into a comic-strip heroine for his publishing house...
Well, I have always believed in doing different kinds of work, and when I was approached for the same, I agreed. In fact, we have been working on it for nearly a year-and-a-half. There is one character that looks like me, while another is for a story that I have conceived of, along with the writer.
Talking of achievements, you've bagged the Filmfare Best Actress Award too. Do awards help prove a point?
Awards do give a sense of achievement. They are an encouragement for the actor. But it is not as hard as proving a point. This is the film business, where only hits and flops matter. One needs to accept that.
Would you rather be part of a commercially successful film or one that earns you critical acclaim?
It has to be both. We make films for the people and not just for drawing room viewing.
Madhur Bhandarkar had said that you were apprehensive about your role in Fashion and needed quite a bit of convincing.
It took him six months to convince me. I wasn't saying no to the venture. I didn't think I was capable of pulling off the part.
In What's Your Rashee? you are apparently essaying 12 roles...
All I can now say is that it's a very difficult part for me, one that hasn't yet been tried by any other actor.
Talking of actors, what was it like to have Shahid Kapoor as a co-star in Kaminey?
It was great. He is very focussed and a talented actor.
But all eyes now seem to be focussed on the alleged link-up between you and Shahid. How do you intend to dispel those rumours?
I've never given in to controversy. When it comes to my personal life, I like to keep it personal.
Professionally speaking then, what's the next step?
I've been here for five years. There's so much more that I want to do and discover about myself.
Does all this attention scare you?
I know everything is momentary. And I want to make the most of it at the right moment.
