In actor-turned-producer Sanjay Suri's film, My Brother Nikhil, the art direction credit list included the name of his wife, Ambika.

Ambika is a qualified counsellor, specialising in behavioural disturbances, interpersonal and familial relationships, and stress management. She is presently the in-house counsellor at fashion designer Anita Dongre's wellness centre, Clay in Bandra.
Holistic approach
"It's been three months since Clay opened, and counselling is an important aspect of the centre," says Ambika. "A wellness and holistic centre is distinct from a gym.
People visit the gym to lose weight, or tone their bodies. A wellness place takes a look at both your physical as well as mental health. "It's not just about exercising, but about understanding your body, having a proper diet and letting go of mental turmoil."
Dongre styled film
Ambika holds a Masters degree in counselling psychology from SNDT University. "Previously, I was with the Lokmanya Seva Sangh, under psychiatrist Dr Manoj Bhatwadekar. Anita is a good friend, and when she opened Clay, I had the opportunity to be part of her wellness movement." Incidentally, Dongre was the stylist for My Brother Nikhil.
No more taboo
Ambika admits that unlike in the West, counselling is not something most Indians resort to. "But it is gradually catching up; people don't mind opening up and saying what is plaguing their mind to a third party. The stigma attached to it is fast fading."
Her clients include older folks as well as teenagers. "Counselling helps them talk about what is on their minds and redress the situation. It could be behavioural problems, anger management, parental and in-law problems, or routine household issues. A wellness centre is an avenue where you de-stress and counselling goes a long way."
Originally from Delhi, Ambika shifted to Mumbai to pursue her Masters in counseling, and post-marriage, Mumbai is now home. And what does hubby Sanjay, who has featured in films like Jhankar Beats, Filhaal and Pinjar, think about her as a counsellor? She laughs and says, "Sanjay has been very supportive. Counselling is all about understanding yourself."
