Aishwarya is not youth centric - Kareena Kapoor
By Mark Manuel, 8 March, 2009
She wore the pants for this issue. Kareena Kapoor, drop-dead gorgeous even at touching distance in black trousers and blue top, a scarf hiding her neck, strode into the BT editorial conference room at 11 am with an air of purpose.

She was here to edit today's International Woman's Day issue — and share in the Times Group's plans for Women's March... a month-long calendar of activities in Mumbai thoughtfully drawn up with the 21st century Indian woman in mind, and incorporating such bold and exciting events as riding the waves and clouds in private yachts and small airplanes, a cooking contest where men wear the aprons and toques and get behind the kitchen fires, and an all-women's car rally from Bandra Kurla Complex to Lonavla and back. The morning 'cuppa was ignored, so were veggie sandwiches not made in brown bread, the Bollywood reigning No 1 knows how to maintain her size zero. And she doesn't snack in between work.

Her agenda was simple, this was a man's world, yes, but there were quite a few women who had made a difference internationally as well — and now was the time to acknowledge them. Like who, the BT edit team asked. "Take Ash and me in Bollywood, for instance," Kareena shot back, blue pencil poised. "Ash has gone international, she's taken the country forward in some way... though she's not very youth centric." What about the other actresses? "They're all still struggling to make the mark," she smiled back, all dimples. And there was Meryl Streep in Hollywood who had taken acting to another level. "I'd swim the Seven Seas to get a glimpse of her," the woman editor said wistfully. "Ditto Oprah Winfrey, who rose on the stepping stones of her former troubled life to make such a huge and positive impact on other people's lives." Somebody asked, what about Michelle Obama? Kareena pouted, "No, Sonia Gandhi... somebody who when she came to India, didn't know the local language... but she changed herself and is today running the country." And Freida Pinto? "She's got determination and a lot of luck... Lady Luck is on her side, look where she's come from, a one-bedroom flat in Malad, today she's doing a Woody Allen film... even Ash hasn't done that."

The stories for this issue were discussed, ticked off on the editor's list as either being approved or shot down. Kareena was asked by an over zealous lady reporter, "Why not have Woman's Day throughout the year?" She replied without hesitation, "One day makes it more special, we excel at our jobs 24/7, but being celebrated and honoured on just one day makes a difference... it's like our birthday or Valentine's day, we'd look forward to it and appreciate it more." Somebody else grumbled that women were forever taking the backseat once they got married. The woman editor pounced on that cue and tossed it back, saying, "The media does not support actresses who get married. Shaadi ho gayi, tho buddhi ho gayi. Actresses sell their talent, not beauty or souls. In Hollywood, actresses are known for their performances, not status and age... look at Kate Winslet, at Meryl Streep, here once you're in your 30s, if you're not sexy, you're branded a Mata!"

Well, I don't think that's absolutely true, but people have their own opinions. I really don't think she might have said this, but you never know!!!!

She is speaking as if she has done a lot of path breaking work. To me she is just an over-rated actress who has an extremely efficient PR team who keep her in news all the time. She is more of a celebrity and less of an actress. And why this obsession with Ash?

^ So true! A couple of months ago she said Ash was her role model, and she hopes to do the quality of work she does after marriage! Seems like Kareena is having some problems with Ash! There was no need for the last statement because kareena isn't getting or never got the offers Ash did! Besides, stop comparing Freida with Ash! Freida's got a long way to go before she comes Kareena or Ash!

LOL - too much dancing at your BFF's wedding Bebo?
What happened to all your recent diplomatic gestures?
and btw if she thinks she is youth centric she is highly mistaken - with the younger actresses like Deepika and Sonam around she is no way a youth icon. And lets wait a few years and see how she turns out when she is 35.
As for her remarks on Frieda - An actress who just has one Super hit film after all these years and that too coming from a filmi family and is still in demand - if that isnt luck I dont know what is(dont tell me she is a good actress - good acting alone doesnt take you far in Bollywood if that was the case Koko and Nandita Das should have ruled Bollywood) - Just stating my opinionsince what is good fr the goose is good for the gander too 😛

" And Freida Pinto? "She's got determination and a lot of luck... Lady Luck is on her side, look where she's come from, a one-bedroom flat in Malad, today she's doing a Woody Allen film... even Ash hasn't done that."

In response to this demeaning statement on Freida I would like to gently remind Kareena- look at yourself, started off as an arrogant girl with hardly any talent for acting, who was thrown out of her first movie due to her high-handedness, gave flops after flops after flops, was widely criticised for her over-acting, in a career span over 6 years have given just 2 hits, look at where you are today. I agree Freida is lukcy but not even 10pc as lucky as you are.

I know my statement is not polite but I'm done with these kids from film families who think that they are the by all and end all of bollywood and can say anything about anyone.

Can't understand why so much fuss is being made about wat she said...Ash is 35 and clearly not youth centric so what's wrong in saying that? Sure Kareena did say Ash was her role model but that doesn't mean she should say Ash is the youth style icon etc....

@ qwww...she never said she thinks she is youth centric but btw she was the only actress voted in Top 10 YOUTH ICONS by youth themselves....
For her remarks on Freida, I don't see anything wrong....Freida Pinto isn't a great actress as Madhubala and it's luck also which took her to that height...As for Kareena giving a superhit film (JWM) then yeah its luck and even she said God's been kind to her.She always gave decent to fantastic performances in films like Refugee,Asoka,Yaadein,Dev,Fida,Chameli,Omkara,Yuva but it was her bad luck that these films flopped...

@ pragya...She didn't say I have have gone international and all but said Ash did so don't see where she's speaking as if she did some path-breaking work. Talking about the other actresses, I would say she's right....They still have to make a mark...Would u say a Deepika,Sonam or Katrina made a mark with their movies? Sonam and Deepika are very talented but are still at an early stage of their career...Talking of overated, I would say Ash is overated since despite having the central role in a film like Umrao Jaan, that film failed misrably but she was voted as most bankable...Is that bankable? A year when Ash didn't have great movies in Bollywood but was on the No 1 powerlist of actresses in filmfare - that I would call overated.

@ sweetcoco...Kareena said Freida is so lucky that today she is even doing a Woody Allen film which even ash hasn't done....I don't see it as a way to belittle Ash...If u read well she uses the Ash example to back the statement that Freida is very lucky coz Ash is definitely more talented than Freida and is in Bollywood way before her but despite this fact Freida is doing a Woody Allen's film today which shows her luck

I think people expect Kareena to be diplomatic everywhere but look like its a big crime if she's honest ....

And she's BACK! Just when I thought she was becoming more mellow.
This was the very thing that I used to find very off-putting about her.
It's okay to have an opinion but this is just bringing others down.

Yes yes this is so bad...Kareena is just bringing down everyone coz Ash is this young 22 yrs old lady so saying she's not youth centric is a very big crime
And Freida is the re-incarnation of Madhubala and MeenaKumari and she's the most beautiful and talented actress so saying Freida got determination and is lucky is so wrong...That was really really bad of Kareena

@Tashann - There was no need to bring up the whole "youth centric" aspect. She wasnt asked about Ash in particular or about being a youth icon right ? So she brought it up randomly and yes it isnt a big deal but its definetly worth commenting about IMHO.
As for Frieda I just found it amusing coming from one who was/is so favoured by luck .
There is a fine line between being honest and being downright rude. One cant just tell whatever they want and then claim to be "honest".But her interviews definetly makes good reading.
