I think Aamir himself is definitely the hitmaker. He clearly knows what he is doing and knows how to work with the directors. He's not one of those actors who relies on the director entirely. It's a joint effort. Both the actor and director has to work together the right way. And I think Aamir knows how to collaborate with the directors, since Aamir is also a director himself.

Good topic.

I think what works in Aamir's favour is that he's very gifted at supporting his directors/producers. He said it during the Fanaa 4 you chat and Kajol agreed with him. He has an uncanny ability to determine what works and what doesn't and I think he pushes his directors to be the best they can be on that particular film. He doesn't just show up and act, he takes an interest in the script, in the dialogue, in the photography, basically everything about the film and he offers suggestions. Call him domineering, control etc. but it seems to work for the guy!

Even Mangal Pandey, which wasn't a hit, wasn't a flop either, it was actually an average grosser. And by the way JA grossing as much as Lagaan is a little misleading, considering there are seven years apart and inflation and the multiplexes have had a dramatic effect on the indian box office. Lagaan wasn't just a hit, it was a superhit, that too even being released alongside a mega blockbuster like Gadar. Quite a feat for a little movie about cricket, with foreigners and a previously unsuccessful director!

You have some valid points...but I still say Ashutosh Gowarikar is somewhat an exception to this list. I know that Lagaan was released alongside Gadar, but considering how horrible Gadar was in every department (storyline, screenplay, acting...etc), Lagaan should have completely overtaken it. I'm not criticizing Lagaan in the least...It's probably my favorite movie of all time. But the fact that Gadar was a blockbuster and Lagaan wasn't definitely says something about what the audience wants.
Jodhaa Akbar may not be as big of a hit as Lagaan once inflation is considered, but it was still a success nonetheless. So I think Ashutosh has the ability to carry a film without Aamir...The other people on the list are way less talented than Ashutosh IMHO. Aamir's presence was a true blessing for them.
