you feel you have known her for ages. On the sets of Fame Gurukul, she
is scurrying after Qazi (who is only interested in standing in front of the
mirror and doing up his hair, and all this while practising his song)
demanding that he sing a particular line again and again…
Ananya Sengupta caught up with Padma Wadkar on the sets of the Sony
show, where she is a much loved faculty member.
It's a different kind of an institute…
Padma: It was so scary in the beginning…I didn't want to be part of
anything competitive. Initially, they had come to talk to Sureshji (hubby
Suresh Wadkar), but then they shot footage of me teaching my students…
and some days later, they came to tell me that they want me as one of the
faculty members in the show. I don't know why they thought I would be
suitable!
You have a lovely voice…any plans of doing playback singing…
Padma:I was very ambitious…then the ambition receded, now, I have no
ambition…(giggles)..maybe, that's why I can teach effectively, I know
exactly what it takes to be successful, because I know what is missing in
me - I would collapse, if I had to perform under so much pressure
everyday!
How fair is the judging here…votes by contestants and the ensuing
politics…
Padma: It is sad, but you know, what happened was natural. We have no
control about how they feel, we can make them good human beings, but
little beyond that! The faculty is always in trouble - we are asked if the
judgment of the students is correct or not and when we answer…we are
held up for being undemocratic. I have decided, that from now on I am
going to be as detached as possible…
Qazi seems to be very confident about always getting through…
Padma: Tell me, if every week, you get such overwhelming response,
won't you get confident. I don't blame him. But again, I can't deny that he
is the most hardworking of the lot…and somewhere even the others
acknowledge this!
What after Fame Gurukul…
Padma: I don't know, there will be a huge void in my life…I will return to
my institute and teach my kids! I have learnt a lot from my stay here…and
frankly, I will miss everyone here…but what to do!
