Rafael Nadal has won the Australian Open for the first time after beating Roger Federer in a five set thriller.

The world No. 1 is the first Spaniard to win the title in Melbourne after coming through a marathon contest 7-5 3-6 7-6 (7-3) 3-6 6-2.

Nadal also beat Federer in five sets in their last meeting; the Wimbledon final of seven months ago.

In doing so, Nadal became only the 12th man in the Open Era to win three of the four majors and the first since Andre Agassi to win Grand Slam titles on three different surfaces.

I would like to say that i really cant stand nadal as good as he is. thats my personal opinion but weldone cos he played very well.

Federer did a wonderful job...it was a great match !! He really deserved to win...but Nadal was alaso playing good.
Don't worry Federer..for me you are still my no.1 and you def get your 14th Grand Slam !!!

Such an incredible, incredible aura this rivalry has. One, a man who is starting to tread up the path of the greats; the other, a champion falling from grace. So much respect.

I think Roger will be able to tie and break the record of 14 Slam titles. However, don't think the French will be his for taking, and if he finds Rafa across the net at Wimby/USO, the scales will tilt against him.

Admit it or not, Roger is not the Roger of 2005-2007 Shrug He is still a great player, one of the best, but there is a new generation coming up that has shown teeth.

I agree that he's still got plenty of fuel to go on, but his only chances are at the hardcourt slams, or Wimbledon. The probability of him winning the French (if Rafa stays healthy/meets Fed in final) is about 0.01%. I like both equally, so just having some perspective here.

I agree its a great rilvary, and though I was disappointed with teh result at teh Aussie Open, I think that Nadal deserved the win. In the last set he seemed like he wanted it more. (And thats saying alot for me who is a huge Federer fan and I don't like Nadal all that much.)
I do think that Nadal has the chance at the Grnd Slam though, but Wimbledon might still be the challenge though, because that is the tournament that Federer will really try to win above all the rest. I feel that reclaiming his Wimbledon title is going to be a great motivator for him.
And for the US Open, Nadal has yet to make it to the final there, I think mostly because at that stage in teh season he is a little fatigued, just because of the strenght and power with which he plays. (He is remarkably fit though, so really its not that muc of a factor, but to me it can be).
And lastly, we have to remember that Nadal is much younger that Federer (in tennis years). Some would say that Federer has passed his prime in tennis terms (20-26) whisltt Nadal is still in the middle of his.
Federer hasn't fallen from grace, but I think that his problem with defeating Nadal is more of a mental issue than an actual talent issue, and if Federer could just overcome that mental block he has there he could overcome the stumbling block that is Nadal. To me Federer's lack of confidence in himself against Nadal is what really cost him the fifth set and the Championship at teh Aussie Open. That is not taking anything away from Nadal, but infact giving him points as he proves that he wants it more.
Sorry guys, I didn't realize that this would turn into such a long post.

I felt really sad for him though, but I had to give Nadal points for trying to comfort him a little.
