My Keeper
Nishikant swore under his breath as he watched his daughter Bani making a fool of herself. Once again she had drank too much and was now behaving out of control. Nishikant's wife Kiran ran up to him, her eyes pleading, "Nishi do something before she embarrasses her further." Nishikant squeezed his wife's hand, "Don't worry, I will handle it."
In the meantime Bani had got hold of the bartender's tie and was pulling at it, her voice slurred, "I said give me another tequila shot." Tarun, Nishikant's legal adviser and Bani's friend put his arm around Bani, "Come on Bani'you have had enough, let me take you to your room."
Bani did not let go of the tie and turned and tried pushing Tarun away, "Go away Tarun. I know dad asked you to keep an eye on me. But it's my party and I will enjoy myself. And I am not drunk, I am perfectly alright."
Tarun shrugged, "At least let go of the bartender's tie'you are going to kill the poor fellow."
Bani looked at the pair of dark eyes staring at her coldly. She giggled, "I am killing you Mr Bartender?"
The bartender took hold of her wrist and twisted his tie free and then said in a bland voice. 'No mam'I am yet dead. And while I am behind this bar, you will get no more drinks."
Bani picked up and empty glass and threw at him. He caught it deftly and smiled at her. Nishikant watched them carefully.
Bani tired to climb up over the bar and found herself being lifted up in two strong arms.
Jai Walia, looked at her disgustedly. "You spoilt little bitch. Don't you care that you are embarrassing your parents in front of all guests. I have a good mind to spank you'if I had been your father, I would have given a good hiding by now."
Bani threw her head back and laughed. "I am so glad you are not my father. My papa never laid a finger on me. I am his darling little princess."
Nishikant quickly walked up to Jai, "Follow me. I want her taken to her room."
The guests watched as Jai followed Nishikant, carrying Bani who was laughing hysterically. Upstairs, Jai dropped her on her bed. Bani rolled over and looked at her father, pouting. "Papa'the party had not even started. You can't do this. I am not missing my party."
Nishikant looked at Jai. "You stay here with her. Make sure she does not leave this room. I have had enough of her drinking and making a nuisance tonight."
"But sir'what about the bar?" Jai asked.
"Don't worry, I will sort it out. At the moment, it looks like you are the only one that can handle her properly." Nishikant glared at Bani, who was now slurring away, trying to sing.
Jai sighed and sat down at the other side of the bed and stared at Bani. Bani sat up and reached behind trying to pull the zip of her dress off. When she failed to reach the zipper, she turned her back to Jai and said flatly, "Do you think you can unzip my dress'I am darn uncomfortable in it."
Jai pulled her on to her feet, "If you want to take your clothes, do it in the bathroom, not in front of me. Come on I will help you to the bathroom."
Holding her up, Jai walked Bani to the bathroom and then looking away, unzipped her dress and shut the door behind him as he left. A few minutes later, the door opened and Bani came out, walking unsteadily, wrapped in a bathrobe.
She came and stood in front of Jai. "Could you massage my head? It's pounding in there." Jai pushed her down on the bed. "Lie down first."
He turned off the main light and switched on the lamp. His fingers pressed Bani's forehead lightly. He prayed she would go to sleep and then he could relax and relieve himself of this unwanted duty.
Jai did not know when he fell asleep, until he found someone pummelling his chest viciously and a female voice screeching, "Oh God'you dirty pig'how dare you'how dare you sleep with me."
Jai open his eyes fully and glared at Bani. She was kneeling next to him, her hair flying as she flailed her fists at him. Jai grabbed her wrists and pulled himself up. "Stop it'you little vixen. I did not sleep with you. I fell asleep by mistake."
Bani twisted her hands and spit, "Yeah'that's what they all say. You all have one thing on your mind, how to quickly get into a girl's bed.
Bani's bedroom door opened and Kiran gasped as she looked from Bani to Jai. She flapped her hand and screamed, "Nishi'oh God Nishi'look what happened with your daughter. Kiran wailed more, "How am I going to live this down now'don't you have no shame. You'" she pointed her finger at Jai, "How could you take advantage of her in her state."
Nishikant rushed up to see what all the shouting was about. He gazed at Bani and Jai. Then calmly he looked at Jai and asked. "Did you do anything with my daughter?"
Jai let go of Bani's hand, "No sir'she asked me massage her head last night, said it was hurting and that's all I did. I must have fallen asleep while waiting for her to sleep."
Bani ran up to her father, "Papa'don't believe him. I was too drunk to know what he did with me."
Nishikant smiled inside, this was the perfect opportunity and he wasn't going to miss it. He pushed Bani off me and looked at her solemnly. "I guess the only solution is for you two to get married. I mean I can't have the gossip going around that you slept with a man in my house can I now Bani?"
Jai looked with disbelief at Nishikant. He must be having a nightmare. Bani now had tears rolling down and she looked at Kiran. "Mom'no'papa can't make me do this. Tell him I don't like that man. I don't want to get married to a bartender."
Kiran shook her head, "I agree with your father. I can't have your and our reputation go down the drain. It's your fault. You refuse to listen to our advise. This should teach you an important lession."
Bani now stared at Jai, Kiran and Nishikant through her tears.
"Jai come with me, we have to talk. Kiran look after her." Nishikant gave a look to his wife, indicating he didn't want any interference.
XXXXX
The hall of the five star hotel was decked out for the most talked about wedding, that of Bani Dixit, daughter of Nishikant Dixit, the CEO of ND Financial Group and Jai Walia, the son of farmer from the village near Chandigarh. The photos of the beautiful and sophisticated Bani Dixit and the tall, dark and sombre looking Jai Walia filled the magazines.
Inside the hall, Jai Walia sat in the mandap, waiting for his bride. His family, his masi, older sister Jigyasa and her husband Aditya, stood near him. Jai's parents had demised long time ago when he was only ten and his sister fifteen. They had been raised by his mother's sister, Shobana Puri, who herself was a widow.
All eyes in the hall turned towards the doorway as Bani walked in holding the arm of her parents. Resplendent in designer red and gold lengha, a sheer gold veil covering her face, she looked the elegant bride. Cameras flashed as people took photos. Jai couldn't help but stare at the vision walking towards him. She was beautiful, but today she looked ethereal, his heart colliding violently against his chest.
The last few days had been hair raising, Bani had refused to talk to him. She had thrown tantrums at everything Nishikant and Kiran tried to discuss with her, blaming all three of them to conspire against her to make her life miserable. The only person who she would listen to was Tarun. It was Tarun who had finally managed to reason with her to go through the marriage, telling her if it did not work out, she could always get divorced.
Bani sat down next to Jai and did not once glance at him. She performed all the rituals robotically. Her heart was gripped with fear that today she was going to lose her independence and be tied to a man she hardly knew or liked. She had lost appetite and had hardly eaten any of the meals properly, causing her to lose some weight.
The pandit asked them to stand up and made Bani hold Jai's hand as they went around the fire. Her small hand was engulfed in his large masculine hand. She felt the heat from his palm singe her skin, making her stare at his back. The wedding was followed by endless photo session and a lavish banquet. Bani hardly touched her food, except for a mouthful of sweet rice, which Jai had offered her. It was the only time during she had locked eyes with his, hers dark and desperate and his dark and mellow.
It was well past midnight when the party finally ended and Jai and Bani made their way to the house Nishikant Dixit had given them as a wedding gift. Jai's masi did arti of the couple before they entered the home. Bani once again followed all the rituals as directed. When she was finally led into the bedroom she and Jai were to share, she was dead tired. Left alone, she quickly took of her jewellery and undressed out of the heavy lengha and put on a nightgown that covered her from top to toe. She went across to the bed and tossed the other pillow onto the floor and got in and fell asleep.
Jai entered his bedroom and stared in the dark. He could make out Bani sleeping on the bed. He walked across and picked up the pillows from the floor and smiled to himself. He changed quickly into his pyjamas and quietly went through the adjoining door, which led into the study. He lay down on the couch, going over the day's events, until he finally fell asleep.
