I used to watch Astitva mentioned in this article- It was a very sensitive and realistic portrayal of a career oriented, independent woman. But as the writer has pointed out, it didn't appeal to the masses (here I assume it is majorly the housewife female viewers) at that time. But may be now that more women are going the career-way, I hope the production houses move ahead of their saas-bahu sagas.
Though I don't watch Bidaai/Balika vadhu, I am glad to know they have questioning protagonists.
I am of the opinion that mass media should tackle social issues along with entertainment when there is a chance. Particularly for a complex society like India, mass media will need to act more responsible.
