I feel youngest: 'Nach Baliye' winner Sachin
New Delhi | December 18, 2005 10:15:06 AM IST

When they celebrate their 20th marriage anniversary next week, Sachin and Supriya Pilgaonkar will not quite feel like an old couple - they have won a TV dance contest beating other pairs who were all younger!
Among 10 contesting couples on the celebrity dance competition "Nach Baliye", they performed scintillatingly and walked away with the prize money of Rs.5 million.

"I am feeling the youngest and India has also proved it," Sachin, in his late 40s, told IANS on phone from Mumbai. His wife is also in her mid-40s.

Both husband and wife - who have been associated with films and TV for many years - are basking in the glory of this newfound success and say the news is yet to sink in.

"I haven't come out of that mode and once I do, I would be able to think about the future," said Sachin.

This success will be followed by their 20th wedding anniversary Dec 21. Obviously they are in a festive mood and want to celebrate it with lan.

The final round of the show, which was aired Thursday night, began with a combined performance - the two finalist couples, Sachin and Supriya, and Manish and Poonam Goel, danced together for 12 minutes.

The episode ran continuously for three and a half hours and the eight eliminated couples performed too in the grand finale.

It was certainly gruelling for the 40 something stars but Sachin and Supriya proved that age was no bar. The audience showered love on them by voting for them through every round of the contest as also the final episode.

And Sachin is grateful. "I thank them all and I love them for voting for us," Sachin said.

Of course, their choreographers Al and Mel did a splendid job. The second season of the show has already been announced and will start in 2006.

Tapping to success

Supriya and Sachin, the Nach Baliye champions, on the show, their struggle and how they plan to spend the prize money.

Laxmi Birajdar

ALMOST ten gruelling weeks of Nach Baliye, that started in October, had small screen screen couples pitting their dance moves against each other and offering a potpourri of hope, solidarity, heartache and success. And the final winners came as no surprise—with a perfect ten in several episodes and a grand finale to match, it was Supriya and Sachin Pilgaonkar.

The oldest couple in the race that had ten telly couples battling it out, the victory surely had them ecstatic, as it came after long hours of practice that began at 10 am. "It was very depressing initially. We never got anything right! Sachin and I had to work really hard to achieve a perfect synchronisation," says Supriya. But the efforts were well-rewarded through a prize money of Rs 50 lakh, after the couple battled it out hard with an equally talented duo of Poonam Narula and Manish Goel.

However, all was not hunky dory for the winner duo. It was sheer positive attitude that helped them bag the coveted title. Says Sachin, "Every week one couple got eliminated and we felt that we might have to face a similar fate. The pressure was humongous and Supriya even cried during one of the elimination rounds. We hid our struggles from the audiences."

Support came from the home front, as Supriya says, "My mother-in-law took care of the household chores and my daughter Shriya used to make me practice my dance steps at home." And how about balancing personal priorities with professional demands? "Trust me, during our practice, Supriya and I never had a single argument," says Sachin. Interestingly, the couple will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary on December 21 and are also planning to star together in a Marathi play.

Surprising revelations too were in the offing. "I realised that I can dance well if I take it seriously," confesses Supriya. As for Sachin, he says, "Nach Baliye helped him shed those extra kilos."

The duo's USP, according to their choreographers Al and Mel, was their hardworking nature, professionalism and punctuality. Supriya sympathises with the eliminated couples, as she says, "It was sad to see eliminated couples being hounded by the media for sound bytes as to why they lost out."

However the fate lay with the audience, who decided the final winner through their votes. Says Supriya, "I think audience votes are a good way of judging the winners because none of us were trained dancers." And what do they plan to do with their prize money? "We haven't thought about it yet. We just want to rest for a while now," she reveals.

And indeed, after dancing their way to glory they deserve the much-deserved break!

Sachin-Supriya win Nach Baliye!

rediff Entertainment Bureau | December 16, 2005 13:08 IST

The Nach Baliye champions have finally been decided.

Sachin and Supriya, who were among the best from the start of the celebrity dance competition, have bagged the title and the prize of Rs 5 million.

The runners-up, Poonam and Manish, could not seem to catch up.

The episode, which was aired on Thursday night, also took a trip down memory lane, as the eight eliminated couples put their best dancing feet forward.

But Nach Baliye fans need not fret. The second season of the show has already been announced.

On marital dilemmas and candid confessions
(Posted on 17 December, 2005
)

I still haven't got over the Thursday night episode of Nach Baliye. I mean, haven't seen something like this gyrate the screen in the last so many years. An awesome show, sexy, sleek, glamourous, slickly produced in every sense of the term - the sets, costumes, script…

I think, more than that, the concept itself rocked. It did not just ride on the popularity of telestars but cashed in on the viewers who are smitten by the reality bug as well. After all, we all know that when it comes to dancing, either you have it or you don't. But Nach Baliye gave an opportunity for tele couples to put on their dancing shoes even if they didn't have it in them. And like any other reality show, the viewers were slowly made a part of the personal lives of the "beautiful people".

For me, the show was not about dance and rhythm but about life really. And life is never really fair, and winning is all about getting your steps right at the right moment and time. The winners (Sachin Supriya jodi) were neither sexy nor drop dead gorgeous; ditto for the second runner up jodi where Poonam is all chubby rolly polly basking in the joy of motherhood.

We all knew it, including the judges, that there were other deserving jodis like Apurva /Shilpa and Varun/ Rajeshwari. But instead the janta voted for the oldest jodis. So, it was all about grit, determination, and the fact that there fought against all odds; considering Supriya with her severe back problem was on pain killers. So, it was definitely sympathy, empathy voting all the way. But whoever said reality shows were only about talent?

It was also a time for onscreen marital squabbles and candid love confessions on the small screen. I hope all these blessed couples continue to find rhythm in their own lives. All I can say is kissiki nazar na lage…

The next 24 hours after victory

Kajol with Sachin
It seems like a never ending celebratory moment", says Supriya describing the last few hours after taking home the coveted Nach Baliye trophy.

Once the winners were declared and the prize giving happened, there was an internal party for all the contestants that went on till the early morning hours.

Good Morning at 9

Giving an account of the after party Supriya said, "I have no idea of time, and how it has lapsed in the last few hours. I still have to sit down look at the trophy and let it sink in.

Kajol seems to be telling Sachin's wife of twenty years
Pic: Rane Ashish
Both Sachin and me were with the other contestants dancing and having a blast till four in the morning.

After that we left for home as there was a press conference planned in the morning. We woke up at around 9 am to meet the media. I must have barely slept for a few hours, but I have no reason to complain."

Kajol congratulated us

Interestingly, as the couple was leaving from the venue of the meet, they bumped into Kajol. How did the actress react to Sachin and Supriya's win? "It was a pure coincidence that we were leaving the hotel and she was entering. She congratulated us on the win and said we rocked in the finale.

I wanted to ask her if she saw my performance, but she being media shy went inside too soon. I think she has lost lot of weight and looks fabulous. It was an amazing feeling to know that Kajol too is aware of our victory."

On her plans of spending the other half of her day she said, "I want to show the trophy to my parents. As a child I would show off any little prize I won. This time around I could share the joy with our daughter as well. Later in the evening I have my Marathi play — Khara Sangaycha Tar to attend."

Goa, here we come

The couple plans to leave for Goa on December 19 where they will also celebrate their marriage anniversary. "I want to visit the Mangeshi temple and thank God for all the blessings we have received. For me it has definitely been a second coming, a new lease of life."

Not happy with Laila song

Supriya adds that her performance on Laila O Laila in the finale didn't really start on the right foot.

"I was nervous because the music started quite early than I expected. We had picked up chits to figure out which jodi is dancing on what song. I wasn't really happy on getting Laila, but decided to give it my best shot.

In fact right from round seven both me and Sachin would change our steps at times, if we made any errors. This would be noticed only by the choreographers, so I knew if I goofed up in my solo round, I should be able to cover up easily."

Post Nach Baliye, Sachin will be working on his Kannada film, while Supriya has her Marathi film and stage that she is looking foward to. The duo will be seen together in Sachin's next Marathi production — Aamhi Satpute.

JODI NO 1: The winning couple, Supriya and Sachin Pilgaonkar, with their daughter Shriya after the finale
Nach Baliye winners Sachin and Supriya Pilgaonkar plan to spend much of the Rs 50 lakh prize money on their daughter Shriya's education.

The couple won 73 per cent of the total votes polled in the final round of the reality show on Star One last night.

Holding on to the trophy with one hand, Supriya said, "My daughter provided the inspiration for taking part in the contest. We have shown her that if, at this age, we can dance and win such a competition, then she can conquer the world."

Describing what she plans to do with her prize money she said, "I have been closely associated with HelpAge India, so I would want some part of the amount to go there. The rest I want to keep for my daughter's education. I also want to gift my friends something for their support throughout the competition."

Maharashtrian vote

Said Supriya, "We obviously got a lot of support from Maharashtra."

In fact, we would get calls from places like Solapur, Sangli and Satara. Towards the last few rounds, we started getting calls from all over the country, so the feeling was awesome."

Chemistry worked

When asked what was the one deciding factor that led to their victory, she said, "I think the chemistry that Sachin and I share in our personal lives came through in our performances. We were in better sync than the other contestants, and the audience voted us for that."

'We aren't losers'

The runners-up for the night was Manish and Poonam Goyal. Said Poonam, "We are not losers. Both of us gave a tough fight, there's nothing to feel bad about."

Manish too was not disheartened. "Of course, everyone who takes part in a competition wants to win. But the fact that Sachinji applauded my dance on stage speaks volumes. I am not disheartened. I am known as an
actor, now I have proved I can dance as well. My dream is to bag a film very soon."

Sachin - Supriya are Nach Baliye champions
<>document.write('Joginder Tuteja, ') Joginder Tuteja, Indiaglitz [Friday, December 16, 2005]

As was widely speculated, the 'jodi' of Sachin-Supriya brushed aside competition from the lucky 'jodi' of Manish-Poonam in the mega-finals of 'Nach Baliye' on Thursday night. The show ran for three and a half hours but that didn't deter the viewers from staying awake way past midnight to hear about the final announcement.

The show began with a combined performance by both the pairs where each of them 'challenged' the other in a scintillating 12 minutes performance. After getting a unanimous nod of approval from all the three judges - Saroj Khan, Malaika Arora and Saroj Khan - the pairs settled down to make way for TV viewers to send vote for them.

In the 2 hours that followed, there were clippings shown from the time of rehearsals to the earlier performances to footage from their real lives. Real fun begun after this when all the 8 eliminated 'jodi's returned on stage to perform once again that made for an electrifying atmosphere. All this while the suspense kept building up with every passing minute though Malaika gyrating to the tunes of 'Mahi Vey' and 'Kaal Dhamaal' made it worth the the wait.

There were also awards for the best female and male dancer from the 8 eliminated jodis that went to Sai and Varun Badola respectively. The magic moment finally came with the results ready to be announced. There was a pin drop silence as hosts Sangita Ghosh and Shabir Ahluwalia got ready to open the envelope containing the winners' name. Thankfully there were no more surprises [after last week's shock elimination of Raageshwari-Varun] with Sachin-Supriya being declared the winners.

It took some time for the feeling to sink in as there was hardly a reaction from the winning couple. But when the two were asked to comment on stage, there were emotions galore. Sachin said, "It was my wife's support that got me all the way till here. We have our 20th marriage anniversary on 21st December and this is a gift for her. Also our choreographers Al and Mel deserve a special mention as without them it would have been impossible to win here. If they were not there I am sure even we won't have been able to perform in such a manner. Also I want to tell Manish that he performed really well today. He has improved so much and while Ponam was anyways a good dancer, he has improved so much."

Equally vocal was Supriya who quipped - "Someone needs to give me a count before I start speaking. My last few weeks have all revolved around the count of 5, 6, 7, 8 that are used to make me dance to the steps. It has been 16 weeks and 10 episodes and all that has happened is shows and rehearsals. I want to talk about Manasi, my friend, who has given me all the spirit to come here and perform."

Finally the runners up Manish and Poonam were called for their comments. While Poonam seemed stable by the turn of events, Manish had a flow of emotions as he commented - "When I started this competition, there were a few people behind the camera who have been angels in my life and brought me closer to my dreams. They are my mom, my sister who supported me when I came down to Mumbai from Delhi, Ekta kapoor, who gave me my first break and fourth my wife Poonam who has given me everything. I told her that I have always participated in competitions to reach finals and win and I need her support for that. I have always dreamt of films and all this seems to be coming true through 'Nach Baliye'. My father had never wished me all the best till now as he feels that I am a pathetic dancer. This time I asked him to see my today's performance. Last but not the least - Mom I am sorry I couldn't win this!"

On this Poonam jumped in and said, "We are not losers as we have reached till here. Everyone asked us if we will win to which I said that we performed for 12 mins and gave our best. Rest everything is left to GOD. Not that by being the second best, I have lost faith. I still believe in GOD and want to thank Star One to have allowed us to participate in this mega show. Our choreographers Danny, Savio and Kunjan did a great job. I also want to recognize Varun and Raageshwari as they are extremely talented."

Such was the emotionally charged atmosphere that one could see even Saroj Khan and Malaika getting emotional and shedding a tear or two.

Second edition of Nach Baliye arrives in latter half of 2006.
