Where have the real heroes disappeared? | 2008-10-06

Have our new age super sensitive heroes become wimps

Remember the time during the late 80's when Dharmendra used to fire a machine gun at random and hoards of bodies fell besides him even if he wasn't aiming at them.

Or during the 90's when Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty took on 20 men, double their size, by just chanting Jai Mata di and beating them senseless.

Or when having chest hair and beating politicians and those who wanted to take over India by creating aatank hi aatank everywhere was the 'in' thing.

I'm sure you do, but in these times, all they remain is a memory.

These days the heroes are more interested in playing with a pink teddy bear than firing machine guns and the irony is they are more fit and muscular than the heroes of the 80's or 90's who couldn't even spell 'exercise' at that time.

All thanks to Sooraj Barjatiya for making 'Hum Aaapke Hai Kaun', the trend started with him for making these guys forget their manly characteristics.

It's a dramatic change. The heroes have become too sensitive, almost wimps, and those who could not adapt themselves to this shift have suddenly disappeared from the screen.

Akshay Kumar for example: at one point he tried to kick and box his way to box office hits which was not that effective, so he shifted focus to comedy and drama and now plays 'wicked sunny', prancing about in 'Singh Is Kinng' and changing diapers in 'Heyy Babyy' has made him the biggest draw at the box office.

One the other hand Sunny paaji who could only act through his fists and biceps was not able to reinvent himself. His last hit was in the form of 'Gadar', ages ago, where he took on the whole of Pakistan all alone and made them remember their naanis.

So now you have John in 'Dostana', with a toned and well built body, wearing bright yellow trunks and acting gay. This would have been considered a professional hara-kiri had someone dared to do it back in the dishum dishum disco days. And now all they do is shake their derriere and do the disco.

Is this what the heroes have come to now? Wearing skimpy clothes and baring their bodies? Wasn't that reserved for the heroines, or are the heroes going to take over that department too. Are we looking at a role reversal here?

The new generations of actor's don't know what it's like to be an on screen real hero whose blood curdles at the slightest hint of evil. That reminds me, where are the nasty boys?

The heroes become the anti-hero and we bawl for them. Whatever happened to bad-ness. These guys are overtly sensitive and seem to have no idea how to do some good 'bad ass kicking'.

Imran Khan acts as someone who is averse to fighting and is proud of it in 'JTYJN'. Ranbir becomes submissive and a toy-boy to Bipasha in 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' and Abhishek as hard as he tries just can't bring himself to act like a macho superhero in 'Drona'.

Have our B-town boys lost their mojo for kiss kiss bang bang cinema. Or have our diluted tastes led to 'fluff from the buff' films. Time to move over to maar-dhaad movies in Bhojpuri cinema if this continues for long.

😆 This article is hilarious! One thing I can guarantee is the demographic of the author. Whoever wrote this article must be in his 40s or 50s who grew up on "dhisum dhisums" and is refusing to change according to the society.

Might I add that this article no less than sexist. Something to the lines of "Shouldn't wearing skimpy clothes be limited to the heroines?" ... At this day and age, where actors are dropping towels, how disillusioned can one be to state that?

In any case, who is going to watch another "angry young man" fighting (in your own words) the "entire Pakistan!" (dude!? get a reality check) ... Cinema portray what the society is at present, and the fact is that today's men are sensitive, mature and in touch with their emotions. And that takes a lot more guts and "machoism" than just punching faces and ignoring emotion.
