ok so I have been thinking about the same thing. I think that we can only put forward what we think - we can never be sure as i doubt that the real reason will ever be revealed by ekta or by HC himself.
I think that what may have happened is that HC may have been very happy to have been offered MB while doing KDMHMD. But between HC and the creatives, they must have realised that his pairing with AG has been more successful than they ever anticipated and so they were baffled and undecided about how HC would be able to do both (they were still unsure whether they should kill Prem off). At the same time, MB had already started and it was not proving to be too popular and HC has second thoughts about it and also did read somewhere that he does not like doing more than one show. So he decided to pull out of MB. Of course, Ekta must not have been happy about this - she likes to dictate to her actors and not the other way round.
What could have happened next must be either that the creatives could not find a way of proceeding with the story and/or raising the TRP's without killing Prem off and then maybe bringing HC back at a later stage. At this point HC's contract was probably up for renewal. HC may or may not have liked the idea of being out of action for 1-2 months; the time that it would take for Prem/his lookalike to come alive again and re-enter the show so he must have said that he will be on the lookout for some other work and depending on whether on when they call him back and what work he may be doing then; he will either accept to come back or they will have to find another Prem or kill of his character for good.
I just hope that we are wrong and that this is a stunt (HC will be back in a1-2 weeks or that Prem/his lookalike will come back in the show and more importantly that there has been no fallout between BT and HC. BT and HC both need each other at this time - for business reasons and I hope that they will swallow their pride and work together for the viewers sake.
Ok just remember that this is just my opinion and you may have a different one. Only but only the actors themselves and ekta herself can know the story.
Whatever, I am hoping that HC will be back in the show.
