Farhan's new lakshya!
3 Aug 2008, 0000 hrs IST, SANAT SAVANAL ,TNN

He has given us memorable films like Dil Chahta Hai and Lakshya.

And now, the director in him takes a backseat while the actor and singer comes to the fore. A man of many talents, Farhan Akhtar, is enjoying his new role even before his maiden venture in front of the camera gears up for release. "I am very excited and enthusiastic about this project. I am waiting for the audience's reaction to the film," he says.

Incidentally Farhan was in town on Friday, along with the entire cast and music directors — Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy — to regale the audiences with some rocking numbers from his forthcoming film. The team would be touring the country shortly.

We get chatting with Farhan on the film which is based on a rock band, where he shares screen space with Purab Kohli, Luke Kenny and Arjun Rampal. So, did he always want to be a rock star? "Just as much as any teenager." He answers. "I have always been into rock music. This led me to pick up the guitar. I have been playing the guitar for almost nine years now."

And, what about his take on singing? "I had to learn to sing while playing the guitar. I worked with Shankar to tune my voice. He gave me various vocal and breathing exercises to work on. I did it with the belief that I could do it." Does he feel that India has finally woken up to rock music? Farhan replies, "India is a young country, and the music is attractive to the youth. So, it is bound to happen. Rock has always been associated with the youth. If you see all the revolutions that have taken place around the world, rock music was associated with it in some way or the other. Rock is big," he affirms.

He also has another film coming up in which he takes on the role of writer and actor. The film, Luck By Chance, has an ensemble cast of Rishi Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia, Juhi Chawla and Konkona Sen Sharma. "It is an interesting take on the film industry. It touches on many facets like being at the right place at the right time. It also showcases the domino effect; how a change in one parameter can have a huge effect on so many things. It is a comedy on one level and drama on another." And, what is his role in the film? "My character's name is Vikram Jaisingh, who has come to Bombay from Delhi to make it big in the business. He knows exactly what he wants and that is to be a Hindi film hero," he tells us.

Given that his films always seem to have a connection with the Indian youth, does he specifically make his films youth-centric? He replies, "I work on stories that attract me. I don't make a conscious decision to write on a particular genre. I like to let the ideas come naturally. It's all about keeping your eyes and ears open, for you never know where you will get an idea from. I hit upon the idea of re-making Don after listening to the original soundtrack of the first film," he adds. As of now, he is all set to rock on the big screen, while hoping that the masses enjoy the acts as well.
