It was tagged as "...the stuff of which fairy tales are made," by Archbishop of Canterbury. In July 1981, Lady Diana Spencer, a young primary school teacher married Prince Charles, heir to the British throne and one of the International world's most eligible bachelors.
Although they'd known of each other since they were kids, they officially met as young adults in 1977. A traditional hunt was organized at the Spencer family seat in Althorp and the two sat atop a haystack in a plowed field and chatted about general things. At the time, Prince Charles was dating Diana's older sister, Sarah but it was instant attraction that prompted the Crown Prince to begin a courtship with the teenager (she was 12 years younger than him). Di reportedly addressed him as 'Sir' during this period so much was she in awe of him!
Under arc-lights and on the brink of stardom, the self-proclaimed potential dairy farmer ("If I'd not been a filmstar, I'd have been a doodhwaala in Allahabad"), Amitabh Bachchan met the elfin Jaya Bhaduri on the sets of 'Guddi.' They never formally dated as the Big B was a conservative gentleman and insisted they go out in groups, but the couple did fulfill a promise they'd made during their 'Zanjeer ' days (if it clicked, they'd go to London on a holiday).
The film released in May 1973 and earned Amitabh his 'Angry Young Man' sobriquet besides loads of critical acclaim. They tied the knot on June 3rd - after which they left for the promised holiday on June 4th!
Amit-Rekha - Media hype or something more than celluloid magic?
A long speculated love-story, the Amitabh-Rekha affair seemed for years the stuff that dreams are made of - but never realized in worldly terms. This alleged affair provided fodder for many tabloid lead stories and also contributed to a guaranteed run at the box-office for their many movies together as lead-pair (Khoon Pasina, Suhaag, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Ram Balram and Mr. Natwarlal ). Cupid is said to have struck on the sets of Do Anjaane.
Of course, Yash Chopra's Silsila (1981), also starring Jaya, only worked to entrench the idea of a real Silsila between them as it depicted the eternal love triangle, love lost and regained in poetic, picturesque terms.
Nargis and Raj Kapoor first met at Jaddan Bai's (Nargis's mother and owner of Famous Studio) Marine Drive flat when the latter needed a studio to shoot his movie in. The door was answered by Nargis, who'd been frying pakoras and unconsciously swiped some across her forehead causing a tendril to fall across her face. This look so mesmerized Raj Kapoor that he later referred to his first glimpse of Nargis as 'angelic' and admitted being so nervous thereafter that when she asked him to stay, he left immediately!
Many years later when Raj Kapoor launched his son Rishi in 'Bobby ' opposite the teenage Dimple Kapadia, he included this very Jab We Met scene into the movie for their first meeting!
Note: The Raj and Nargis love story was doomed from the start as Raj was already married with no intention of leaving wife Krishna and Nargis had to wait a few more years for her Knight in Shining Armour a.k.a. Sunil Dutt, to come by.
Sunil Dutt and Nargis first met on the sets of Balraj Sahni's Do Bigha Zameen. She was already a star and he a struggling actor. Their love blossomed after the near-tragedy of a fire on the sets of Mother India where Nargis was trapped amid haystacks that were ablaze and Sunil Dutt braved the raging fire to rescue her.
This scene too, has recently been used in Farah Khan's block-buster 'Om Shanti Om ,' starring Deepika Padukone and Shahrukh Khan.
Saif and Amrita's was a whirlwind romance, the seed for which was sown at their first meeting! Bratty newcomer with royal lineage (son of the Nawab Pataudi and 70's sexy siren Sharmila Tagore) Saif Ali Khan was besotted with the sophisticated charms of a much senior Amrita Singh at first sight and insisted on dropping her home from a friend's party to move things along!
He was a smooth charmer and Amrita was won over by his boyish persistence and fun-loving attitude instantly. Their wedding ceremony hosted at a friend's house came as no surprise to the media!
Unfortunately things were not to be and a decade and two kids later, the two are no longer together.
Saif-Kareena: Two kids and a divorce later, Saif returned to bachelorhood, new girlfriends and a rocking career - and along with his slick, new image came his current squeeze, the bubbly Bebo, or Kareena Kapoor! Even though 'Tashan ' bombed at the box-office, the film remains Saif Ali Khan's favorite because, "I met Kareena during Tashan. That's enough for me."
Sachin Pilgoankar (Balika Badhu's shy, sweet college-going Bengali groom) and Supriya Sabnis met on the sets of their first film together where Sachin was the director! The film was wrapped up soon after and so were their lives - together - as Sachin proposed marriage and set the ball rolling for their love story to span a 16 years old daughter, 20 years of married life and winning TV's most loved celeb dance-show, Nach Baliye in one lifetime!
Small screen seductress, Archana Puran Singh met much-younger beau Parmeet Sethi, also a TV/Film actor at a common friend's party 17 years ago. Instant chemistry, several TV and film scenes and 2 sons - Aryamaan (9) and Ayushmann (6) - later, their fans have ample proof of their collaborative efforts speaking strongly of an enduring love!
TV stars Rohit Roy and Mansi Joshi met each other during a photo shoot 15 years ago when Rohit was assisting director Kunal Kohli. Spontaneous liking existed but love took time to develop. Thus, while Mansi dabbled with modeling and theater for a while, their paths crossed professionally during TV shows both featured in and worked up into a courtship period before marriage seemed imminent. Now daughter Kiara, 3, keeps them on their toes but its sharing the little everyday joys that keeps their romance alive.:
Ramp-scorchers Bipasha Basu and John Abraham met on the sets of 'Aetbaar ' and set tongues wagging about their bodylicious pairing both on-screen and off-screen. They were inseparable for 7 years thereafter and alleged affairs with co-stars, box-office flops and hits notwithstanding (including the highly forgettable 'Goal ' and erotic thriller 'Jism ') have recently announced their engagement!
Guru Dutt met Geeta Roy during the song recording of Baazi and fell in love with her impish charms and sweet singing voice. She was fascinated by the intensely brooding, intellectual man who looked into her very soul!
They tied the knot on the 26th of May, 1953 and though they had a rocky marriage, it is believed Guru Dutt took flashes from their life together to create memorable movie moments about marital obligations, disillusionment and love's shadows besides the common thread of unrequited and doomed love in his films.
'Khel Khel Mein' ishq hua say filmi khabroos , attributing the scenic locales used in 'Kabhi Kabhi ' as the perfect background for the Rishi-Neetu romance! Teen-idol Rishi Kapoor and child-star turned lead actress, Neetu Singh (then aged 14) met as co-stars, became friends and progressed to being lovers despite many differences pointed out by loved ones. Their wedding celebrations lasted 20 days, included an all-night sangeetsari in silver gifted by Krishna Raj Kapoor to the 'bahu ', a grand fireworks display organized by the Moranis and the highlight? The bride fainting at her wedding due to a heavily embroidered lehenga with the groom following suit! (Apparently, the place was so crowded Rishi fainted before climbing on the 'ghodi ')!
Hows that for 'yeh toh hona hi tha ?'
Tragedy King, Dilip Kumar was requested by Naseem Banu, Saira Banu's mother to dissuade her daughter from forging a relationship withRajendra Kumar. As luck or love would have it, Dilip Kumar fell for the actress' petite beauty and ended up proposing to her instead and theirs has been one of the most enduring love stories of the Hindi film industry till date!
Not just movie sets, but premieres too have their own lucky charm for some. 'Dream-girl' Hema Malini couldn't stop staring at the strapping Jat , Dharmendra at the premiere of a K Abbas film! Completely taken in by his wholesome good looks, she went on to star in some fun flicks e.g. Seeta Aur Geeta, Jugnu, Sholay, Azad, Raja Raani etc. with him and as a result of their on-screen popularity, the mutual attraction flared into love then marriage eventually, though Dharmendra never divorced his first wife.
Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge is a truism bubbly Kajol will heartily agree with as it happened to her in real life. Rumors about her alleged nose-in-a-book attitude on all film sets, refusal to comment on the whispered affair with Shahrukh Khan (with whom she delivered maximum hit films) and inclination towards blowing a short-fuse when confronted with controversial questions didn't so much as elicit half an interview's worth for the scandal rags. But, when action hero, Ajay Devgan, stole her heart with his quiet charm and gentlemanly demeanor after they met on the sets of 'Ishq ', everyone knew what their fans had always known: Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha!
Telly world's stars, Gauri Pradhan met hubby Hiten Tejwani while shooting for a commercial, then again on the sets of 'Kutumb.' Of course, since the course of true love never ran smooth, the two actually ignored each other for a good while after their first meeting and even while they were co-star the first time round! But a common interest like reading and being comfortable in each other's company over time allowed love a place in their lives and now the couple has been happily married for close to 3 years.
Garam Masala may well be what action-hero Akshay Kumar (and Raveena Tandon, Shilpa Shetty, Priyanka Chopra and co.'s ex-heart-throb) is regarded as, being the hottie that he is. But, it was fellow Punju and actor, the smiley Twinkle Khanna's sweet charms that gave him his 'Ting' moment! The two met and fell in love on the sets of 'Khiladi No. 1 ' and were married soon after. Twinkle quit acting to pursue a career in interior decoration and play devoted wife and mom while Akki continues to scale new heights in Bollywood's dream market!
'Kaho Na Pyar Hai ' went their debut movie's title song but few people know that the 'first meeting' scene with co-star, Amisha Patel (where her fancy car stops at a traffic light and she repairs her make-up as Roshan Jr. looks on in fascinated indulgence) is inspired from Hrithik Roshan's real-life love story with wife, Suzanne Khan whom he chanced across in a similar situation before they were officially introduced.
He says of his Jab We Met sequel with Suzanne Khan: "Suzanne was my first crush as a boy. Later when I was around 16, I had gone to attend a wedding ... that's when I saw her again. I turned to my friend (Uday Chopra) and told him, 'You see that girl there; I am going to marry her someday.' Fateful words indeed, for soon Hrithik got mutual friends to introduce them, they dated a while till in a coffee shop, Suzanne stopped sipping her cuppa feeling something "clunky at the bottom" - it turned out to be a promise ring!
They tied the knot at Suzanne's dad Sanjay Khan's Bangalore resort in 2003 after the super success of Hrithik's debut film and continue their personal dream run with two sons, Hrehaan and Hridhaan.
Petite doctor Juhi a.k.a Gurdip Kohli experienced her Jab We Met moment with future soul-mate on the sets of
'Sanjeevani ' where she shared great vibes with co-star Arjun J Punjj. Shared interests like dancing and listening to music led them to discover many others.
While Juhi shyly giggles it was Arjun's livewire energy and wicked sense of humor that tugged at her heart-strings. The two love-birds wed each other in traditional Punjabi ceremony with much fanfare some time back.
When King Khan was a struggling actor and dreaming of making it big, he met 14 year old Gauri Chibb (who thought he was ugly, btw) at a party, dancing away in abandon and completely oblivious of his interest in her!
Shahrukh pursued her relentlessly and they dated for a while before his possessiveness resulted in the young Gauri feeling hemmed in; she took off to Bombay for a couple of days and the roving Romeo followed her there, found her on a beach with some friends and proposed to her.
Won over by his ardor and persistence, Gauri laughingly gave in and the two have been happily married with 2 kids and many good wishes from fans worldwide ever since!
