Cut to the recent past. Around the same time last year, the name 'Shivani Kapur' didn't exactly ring a bell in the world of modelling.
All of 17, she had just secured her A-levels from Sydenham School in London when she promptly packed her bags and headed for Delhi with a mission to make it big in fashion circles. Her mom, though, had a big Q on her lips: 'What will you do in a country which throws up so many international beauty queens?' Shivani's reply: ''There's always room for one more!''
Today, Shivani one of the most sought-after models around. What's more, since the ramp world is not enough, Shivani has under her belt a fair share of coveted ad campaigns. ''I'm really lucky to have been recognised by the industry so soon,'' says Shivani, ''Fortunately for me, when I shifted base from Delhi to Mumbai, I didn't have to rough it out — I landed a few really good contracts. So, I'm not really hunting around for work. I am pretty happy with the way things are going.''
And things are going just fine. Barely a couple of months old on the desi modelling circuit, Shivani appears to have catwalked her way with consummate ease. ''Honestly, I never expected so much work so soon. Ever since I have been in India, I have been as busy as busy can be.'' Incidentally, the passage to India came more by chance than design. ''I happened to meet Tarun Tahiliani in London and he suggested that I model.'' Soon enough, she started modelling for Asian magazines in Big Ben city. ''It was fun modelling during my school days, more so because I love Indian clothes, which have a certain grace to them.'' When choreographers Aparna and Tanya came over to London for a show, they saw Shivani. A tip followed: it makes sense to give India a try.
Shivani promptly booked a ticket to ride to Destination India. And, so far, Shivani hasn't had reason to regret her decision. Specially when, spotting her impressive vital stats and a face which can launch a thousand smiles, Bollywood has come a-calling. ''As a matter of fact, I have received film offers,'' confides Shivani, ''But Bollywood isn't my scene right now. I came to India to pursue modelling because it is something I love doing. This is the way things continue to be, though I do few runway shows.''
An hour-glass figure. Traffic-stopping looks. Shivani spells haute. Surprisingly, she's not as diet-conscious as most models. ''I don't work out and just freak out on shami kababs and butter chicken!'' A smile follows. You only live once. And Shivani is living life to the hilt.
Happily settled in Mumbai, Shivani has bought her own flat in Bandra and is busy doing it up. All by herself? ''Well, I do have a boyfriend — an ad film-maker from Delhi. We stay together so that we can fall back on each other. My parents have met him and everything is fine at the moment.''
Back to the big Q posed by Shivani's mom. The question has been answered of course, and Mrs Kapur is ''over the moon!'' As is Shivani. ''After all, I work hard and then head home, where I sit in front of the TV and grab a pizza. Now, isn't that what a carefree life is all about?'' Another big Q. But then, living life after a fashion isn't Shivani Kapur's style.
