Pakistan include Ajmal for Asia Cup

June 22, 2008

Pakistan squad
  • Shoaib Malik (capt), Misbah-ul-Haq, Fawad Alam, Iftikhar Anjum, Mohammad Yousuf, Nasir Jamshed, Salman Butt, Shahid Afridi, Sohail Tanvir, Umar Gul, Wahab Riaz, Younis Khan, Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), Mansoor Amjad, Saeed Ajmal

Pakistan have named offspinner Saeed Ajmal in their 15-member squad for the Asia Cup, which starts on June 24.

Ajmal, 30, made a mark in the 2007-08 first-class season, taking 38 wickets in 12 matches at an average of 29. "Ajmal has impressed with his wicket-taking ability and can also bowl one which goes out like former spinner Saqlain Mushtaq and we hope he does well in this tournament," chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed said.

Pakistan didn't have a specialist spinner in their squad for the one-week long Kitply Cup, which they won after beating India in the final. Shahid Afridi and Fawad Alam were used by captain Shoaib Malik, who himself didn't bowl due to a sore shoulder. However, he will have more options for the Asia Cup with Ajmal and legspinning allrounder Mansoor Amjad in the team.

Kamran Akmal had been left out of Pakistan's list of 20 probables for the tournament, with the selectors opting to hand the wicketkeeping gloves to Sarfraz Ahmed. Akmal had been Pakistan's regular wicketkeeper since November 2004, when he took over from Moin Khan, playing virtually non-stop in all three formats. However, his inconsistency behind the stumps since the 2006 tour to England has finally cost him the place in the side.

Other players to be dropped from the squad for the Kitply Cup are batsmen Bazid Khan and Naumanullah and fast bowler Sohail Khan.

Pakistan play their opening game of the tournament on June 24, against Hong Kong in Karachi.

Wow! Finally pak searched for another spinner is over.. now we have to see if he is as impressive as saqlain mustaq used to be

Pakistan has picked up a good squad...I'm pretty satisfied wid it.. Just one thing where the balance seems to b out..We have 1 fast bowler short..I mean, they've picked up both Mansoor Amjad n Saeed Ajmal..
It's sad to see Sohail Khan miss out..coz of malaria I think they should have picked up Abdur Rauf in his place..
Anywayz, it still is a good squad.. Though it has lot of spinners but they all r different from each other..so we hav lot of variations now.. We already have Fawad Alam as the only left arm spinner, we have a genuine leg spinner in Mansoor Amjad and a genuine off spinner in Ajmal..!
But the BIG question is : Who will open Pak innings?😕
Akmal used to do that...but we dont have him now and Sarfaraz cannot open.. If we play a specialist opener Nasir Jamshed, we'll have to drop the 6th (or technically the 5th) bowling option: Fawad Alam. Now this simply cant happen coz Malik n Fawad have to shre 5 overs each to complete the 50 overs!!! 😕 Afridi is simply not in good batting form..so they're not gonna send him up the order.Plus, he seems to have injured himself during the practice session and so, he may miss the first match against Hong Kong...That leaves either Malik or Younis Khan to open the inngs wid Salman Butt. Or may be(as I've heard from Fawad bhai himself), they'll take a gamble and play Fawad Alam as the opener coz he's already not getting enuff chance to bat at no.7 or 8 😕
I want either Malik or Fawad bhai to open..wat do u guys think?

Unfortunateky, the match didn't air in UK 😭 They were too busy showing a very boring match with SL vs. B
From what I read and hear, India played magnificently! 👏 👏 People may argue that it is only against Hong Kong but I think comparing how they played against Pak, we really did well! 😊 I just wish Rohit Sharma would return to form very quickly! Its sad because it was an easy way to increase average, strike rate and much more 😆 Congrats to Dhoni for his fourth ODI hundred but more importantly, a huge congrats to the great youngster of India-Suresh raina for the second fastest 100 for india 😉 👏
And im sure you all know India has a world record for the biggest margin of defeat of 257 runs against Bermuda. If only they got 2 more runs, they would have beaten this record But congrats for another record of 256 runs! 😃 👏
Hong kong desperately need to work on their batting to try and complete all 50 overs. I know their still a young team but criticism should be taken positively! 😛

Lastly, I just want to say today the men in blue showed me they don't just play for themselves and their records, they play for their country-OUR TEAM INDIA! 😳as we today celebrate the 25th anniversary of when we won the world cup! i hope we do win it soon again! 😊
I salute the men in blue. 👏 👏

(Looking forward to Ind vs Pak tommorow!)
