Bollywood's favourite WHIPPING GIRL

Aishwarya has never ever come to be accepted for her histrionic skills. No matter what she does, her radiant looks – sort of plastic and mannequin-like according to vehement critics – simply continue to override her performance.
By Rajeev Nair
Aishwarya did the unpardonable in 'Jeans'… that Tamil movie, which attained notoriety for being nominated by India to compete at the Academy Awards: She danced with her mouth wide open.
Now, don't ask if the other actresses don't do that but when Aishwarya Rai, India's former Miss World does that, it looks rather unbecoming.
Guess it all must have started then.
Aishwarya has never ever come to be accepted for her histrionic skills.
No matter what she does, her radiant looks – sort of plastic and mannequin-like according to vehement critics – simply continue to override her performance.

In fact, that almost confined her in the image trap of the 'demure Indian wife/lover' a la 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' to 'Devdas' to (a certain extent) 'Kandukondein Kandukondein.'
And then she shook free… well, almost.

When Bollywood was only talking about the great 'cross over' to the West, Aishwarya went ahead and did it.
She walked the Cannes red carpet, brushed shoulders with Hollywood legends, even judged films for their artistic merit… and in the process, she became the pet peeve, the forever whipping girl for Bollywood critics.

Be it 'The Last Legion' or 'Sarkar Raj,' Aishwarya Rai cannot and would not be given the respect she commands as an actress.

There is almost a devilish glee in belittling her – the strategy that works to the initial advantage of critics, who want to be heard above the din.
It is pretty simple, actually.
When you pan Aishwarya – or for that matter any popular star – you almost position yourself on a more intellectual plane.
On the flip side is the forever fawning of the mainstream film press. Gushing and drooling, they place Aishwarya on a pedestal… and she became an easy target.

And it continues to this day… to 'Sarkar Raj,' where despite a decent performance, she continues to be panned.

This is no exercise to cast a soft light on Aishwarya.
But since when did actors take the blame for flaws in their characterization?
Aishwarya's character in 'Sarkar Raj' could have been loosely inspired by the real-life persona of Rebecca Mark of Enron – but why must we insist that Anita has to be a Rebecca clone?

Why can't the character be perceived as just another lady-entrepreneur – who dreams big but is emotionally brittle at heart?

Maybe, there must be a different yardstick to critique on Aishwarya Rai – where she is not judged for her off-screen persona but as a mere actor – not immensely talented but not as bad or worse than the Sushmita Sens and Priyanka Chopras either.

Come on, this girl has given India some proud moments.
Why be merciless just because her looks can make you swoon?

I agree... Ash is just this sophisticated punching bag , scapegoat , target to play archery.....but frankly , it makes no difference to her or her queen-like life.

Earlier, i didn't like Ash much... I could never connect to her unreal perfect beauty.... but as i saw over the years how people love to hate her and refuse to ignore her ... pan her , insult her intelligence, portray her as a vixen irrespective of the authenticity of her faults ....love playing blame games on her and label her a cold beauty holding her beauty against her.... I felt that it takes a lot of patience , tolerance , maturity and dignity to keep marching amidst such negative atmosphere...

It's the patience and steely spirit of this woman that makes me appreciate her .....it's a tough deal living under the spotlight when half the world hates you simply beacsue they have pre-conceived notions and have sworn to hate you....

But all has worked well for Ash.....she has lived a life true to her name. And no matter how much we hate to admit it... she was born to rule and that she does , without flinching.

Carry on Ash....you could very well write a book about surviving hatred with classic dignity.

Agree 100% with the article - most of the critics before they even watch the movie proclaim that she is just there for her beauty. It like they cant move past her looks - an average looking actress will get praised for a mediocore teeny bopper film role but Ash even when she does a good job has to get panned. I thought she was perfect in Guru - but she hardly got noticed for that rolei n the media.
whatever - she has survived admirably so far inspute of the nay sayers and am sure she will do even better in the future

anyonen who says ash is only good looking obviosuly hasn't seen her movies anyone who doubts that she is not a great actress needs to see hum dil de chuke sanam, devdas, guru, provoked and jodha akbar as she was brilliant in all of them, i don;t understand these critics they praise kareena for her acting even though shes beautiful as well so why only point fingers at ash, i agree kareena is a good actress but so is ash so why don;t people give her credit for it and infact ash is a better actress than kareena so people need to stop criticising her and hating just because shes so gorgeous. being gorgeous as her is not the begin all and end all so why are people jealous of her.

[/quote] well said Nitica 👏 ...I agree, people expect perfection from her so no matter what she does, she will be ridiculed. This is the price she has paid for being the most beautiful and most envied woman in Bollywood but I do admire her resilience and determination. She has lived her life on her terms and come what may, will continue to do so. I also admire her for always portraying India in a good light in freont of the world 👏 👏

well for a change a topic that veers one away from sarcasm and all out punching.its getting so tiresome to see her targeted all the while. though i myself am not a great fan of her skills as an actress, but she has done well and is doing well as the face of india. so lets hand her that and allow her to enjoy her moments too.
