CHAPTER 44
This chapter felt like one long, quiet exhale.
There was something so beautiful about the way nothing huge had to happen for the chapter to feel enormous. Tulsi waking up with her head against Mihir, him still instinctively protecting her from the cold window, the two of them exchanging a simple "Jai Shri Krishna" after everything they've been through... those little moments somehow carried more weight than a dramatic confession ever could.
And then the hotel lobby scene. That line. "I would like to stay in my husband's suite."
I actually had to pause there because after everything these two have been through, it wasn't just a logistical decision. It felt like Tulsi quietly reclaiming something that had been lost for years. What made it even better was that she didn't make a spectacle of it. She just said it. Calmly. Almost matter-of-factly. But we as readers know exactly how much that sentence cost her and how much it means.
And Mihir asking her with just that look if he should say something... that tiny Kahoon kuch? moment was so him. He wants to protect her, but he is also finally learning that protecting Tulsi doesn't mean deciding for her. He waits for her answer. She gives it. And he follows her lead. That was such a lovely reflection of how far their relationship has come.
I also really loved the Bandhej banner scene. Tulsi seeing that tiny "Bandhej - India" among all those massive international names and immediately wanting to record it "ladkiyon ke liye" got me. Because Mihir can see the significance of the conference in terms of prestige and recognition, but Tulsi's first thought is still about the women who built this with her. And then Richard recognizing her separately from Mihir's world made that even more satisfying.
"She's here in her own right this time."
That line from Mihir was such a quietly proud husband moment. He wasn't introducing her as an extension of Virani Industries or as his wife who happened to be accompanying him. He was telling someone from his world about her work. About what she had built. You could feel how proud he was without the chapter needing to spell it out.
But honestly, the parts that destroyed me were the smallest ones.
Mihir knowing she'd get cold and bringing shawls and thermals without being asked.
Tulsi reminding him to take his BP medicine.
Her waking him by touching his forehead.
Him wanting to touch her hair but hesitating because six and a half years have changed even the things that once required no thought.
And then that tiny moment where he finally reaches out, touches her hair once, and immediately pulls his hand back like he's afraid of being caught.
That "Usne dekha toh nahi?" absolutely got me. 😭
Because this is what makes their reconciliation feel so much more meaningful to me. They aren't suddenly behaving like the separation never happened. They're relearning each other. Every familiar gesture has become something new because there is now history attached to it. He remembers what it was like to touch her without thinking, but he also remembers what it was like to lose her. So even affection comes with caution now.
And then the 1:45-ish scene...
That was probably my favourite part of the entire chapter.
Mihir waking up in the dark and, for one terrible second, expecting the empty side of the bed - only to remember that she's actually there - was heartbreaking in such a quiet way. The line about his body having learned to expect the emptiness after six and a half years really stayed with me.
And then:
This is my home.
That didn't feel like a romantic line. It felt like something much deeper. Like his body finally realizing something his mind has probably been afraid to believe for months: she came back, and this time she's choosing to stay.
The tears made complete sense. Especially because he wasn't crying to be forgiven. He wasn't asking anything from her. She wasn't even awake. It was just the overwhelming relief of having something he'd thought he'd permanently lost lying peacefully three feet away from him.
And I loved that Tulsi gets her own quiet moment afterward too. She wakes around three, sees him sleeping, smiles, drinks some water, lies back down facing him, and sleeps peacefully. No dramatic internal monologue needed. Just contentment. After everything, contentment feels huge.
Also, the sapphire ring sitting in the closet??? 👀
The fact that Mihir couldn't even bring himself to leave it in the safe after she might see it, and instead tucked it under his clothes... sir. 😂 We see you. I am now extremely suspicious of every closet-related sentence in this story.
What I think I loved most about this chapter, though, is that it didn't treat sharing the suite as the culmination of their reconciliation. It treated it as something much quieter: the next ordinary step.
They're not suddenly healed. They're not pretending the six and a half years didn't happen. They're simply sleeping in the same room again. Sharing a duvet. Walking together. Eating ice cream. Discussing shawls. Reminding each other about medicines. Making plans for tomorrow.
And somehow those ordinary things feel incredibly romantic because of everything it took for them to get back to this point.
This chapter genuinely felt like watching two people who have spent years learning how to survive separately finally discovering what it feels like to rest beside each other again.
And after all the pain, all the hesitation, all the almosts...
They finally slept through the night.
That feels like a victory all by itself. ❤️
Awaiting the next eagerly!
