Some theories suggest that its the Messi effect. Messi has many records to his name but not winning FIFA twice. Others suggest that it isn't Argentina being favored alone but all of the big teams: France, Argentina, Spain. Bechare Brazil and Portugal got eliminated still. Basically FIFA can't have a new team win. They only want the biggies to win.

Some preferences they have smiley39smiley44

I wish someone would tell them that it's the underdog story that always grabs the most attention. Nobody would probably care about Messi winning another World Cup a few days later—but Cape Verde, DR Congo, Egypt, or even Germany or Belgium (even though they don't really fit the underdog category) winning would make headlines for DAYS!!! Even non-football fans like me would be curious to know.

DR Congo holding Portugal to a draw is one of the biggest highlights of the tournament, and so is Cape Verde's goalkeeper keeping a clean sheet against Spain! Someone at FIFA is seriously bungling their jobs! smiley36Please give them a complimentary PR starter pack.

See while those are draws while the games are happening, before the game the main reason people come out is for the biggies - Messi, Ronaldo, Mbappe, etc. So FIFA has to ensure these teams and players remain happy as much as possible.

Think about it. If you can only buy 1 game's tickets before the games ever began, which game would you have bought? Curacao versus Cote d'Ivoire or Mexico versus South Africa or Norway versus France. I'm talking group round tickets. Most likely one of the second 2. So FIFA has to ensure those teams remain happy.

Now what FIFA should learn from this is that you should only keep the major teams happy during group rounds. Once the group rounds start and the underdogs start playing better then they should become unbiased. But will FIFA learn that? No. Next WC this will happen again.
