Chapter 5 (Just Friends)
The Perfect Project Director
For the next few days...
The evening tea tradition came to a halt.
Not because anyone wanted it to.
But because Vaishnavi barely had time to breathe.
The new project had taken over her entire schedule.
Meetings.
Presentations.
Deadlines.
Client calls.
By the time she left the office...
It was already dark.
Meanwhile...
Every evening at five...
Parth instinctively looked across the road towards the café.
It felt strangely empty.
Dev noticed.
"You miss the tea."
Parth smiled faintly.
"I miss everyone."
Dev raised an eyebrow.
"Everyone?"
Parth quickly corrected himself.
"I mean..."
"The whole group."
Dev chuckled.
"Of course."
Inside Vaishnavi's office...
The conference room was buzzing with discussion.
Reyansh stood before a presentation screen.
His sleeves were rolled up.
A marker rested in one hand.
He looked around the room.
"Our client doesn't just want a software solution."
"They want an experience."
The team listened attentively.
He continued,
"So don't think like engineers."
"Think like users."
Vaishnavi found herself nodding.
His ideas were practical.
Simple.
And effective.
The meeting continued for another hour.
Finally...
Reyansh closed his laptop.
"Excellent work, everyone."
Then he looked towards Vaishnavi.
"Could you stay back for a minute?"
The others slowly walked out.
Vaishnavi entered Reyansh's cabin.
"You wanted to see me?"
He smiled.
"Relax."
"You look like you're expecting bad news."
She laughed.
"I've had enough meetings for one day."
"I promise this isn't another one."
He handed her a file.
"I went through your previous project documentation."
She looked surprised.
"You really read everything?"
"I did."
"You've got a very systematic way of solving problems."
"Thank you."
"I'd like you to lead the technical side of this project."
Vaishnavi blinked.
"Me?"
"I trust your judgement."
She smiled.
"I won't disappoint you."
"I know."
"That's exactly why I asked."
As she left his cabin...
Aarti was waiting outside.
"So?"
"What happened?"
Vaishnavi smiled.
"He just gave me more responsibility."
Aarti grinned.
"See?"
"I told you he likes your work."
Vaishnavi nodded.
"He's demanding..."
"But he knows how to encourage people."
That evening...
Parth and Dev sat alone in the café opposite the coaching institute.
For the first time...
There were only two cups of tea on the table.
Dev sighed dramatically.
"I miss our noisy table."
Parth smiled.
"So do I."
Just then...
They saw three familiar figures walking out of the office building.
Vaishnavi.
Aarti.
And Vandana.
Walking with them...
Was Reyansh.
The four of them stopped outside the entrance.
Reyansh was explaining something about the project.
The three girls listened carefully.
Then...
He said something that made all three laugh.
Parth watched silently.
Dev looked at him.
"You want to go say hello?"
Parth hesitated.
"They're talking."
"So?"
"They're busy."
Before Dev could insist...
Vaishnavi happened to look across the road.
She immediately spotted the two cousins.
Her face lit up.
She waved enthusiastically.
"Parth!"
He smiled and waved back.
She excused herself from the conversation.
"I'll be right back."
Crossing the road, she walked over to them.
"I'm so sorry."
"We've been getting delayed every day."
Parth smiled.
"It's okay."
"How's the project?"
She laughed tiredly.
"Exhausting."
"But interesting."
Dev pointed towards Reyansh.
"So..."
"How's the new boss?"
Vaishnavi smiled.
"He's actually very good."
"Strict?"
"A little."
"Scary?"
"Not really."
"He explains everything patiently."
"And he always appreciates good work."
Parth listened quietly.
She continued,
"I've learned a lot in just one week."
There was genuine admiration in her voice.
Not admiration for a man...
But admiration for a mentor.
Parth noticed it anyway.
At that moment...
Reyansh looked across the road.
He recognized Parth immediately.
A broad smile spread across his face.
Without hesitation...
He crossed the road.
"Parth!"
Before Parth could react...
Reyansh pulled him into a warm hug.
"My God!"
"You've grown up."
Parth laughed.
"So have you, Reyansh bhai."
Reyansh playfully ruffled his hair.
"Tulsi Dadi wasn't exaggerating."
"You're still the same."
Dev folded his arms.
"He still loses his wallet."
Reyansh laughed.
"Some things never change."
The cousins shared another laugh.
Vaishnavi watched them with a smile.
She hadn't expected the confident Project Director at the office...
To become such a warm, affectionate elder brother outside it.
For the first time...
She saw another side of Reyansh Virani.
And she found herself thinking...
"No wonder Parth looks up to him."
Little did she know...
Parth wasn't looking up to Reyansh anymore.
He had slowly begun...
Comparing himself to him.
And comparisons...
Rarely end well.
Growing Shadows
Over the next few weeks...
Life settled into a comfortable rhythm.
Morning...
Coaching classes for Parth and Dev.
Office for Vaishnavi, Aarti and Vandana.
Evening...
If work allowed, all five of them met for tea.
If not...
They stayed connected through messages.
It wasn't unusual anymore to find their phones buzzing with notifications from their group chat.
☕ Mumbai Gang ☕
Dev: Who wants samosas?
Aarti: You ask that every day.
Dev: Because it's an important question.
Vandana: 😂😂😂
Parth: I'm in class.
Dev: Didn't ask you.
Vaishnavi: Poor Parth 😂
Parth smiled at his phone.
Dev looked over.
"You're smiling again."
"It's just the group chat."
"Hmm."
A few days later...
The five friends finally managed to meet again after nearly a week.
The café owner looked up and smiled.
"Back together?"
Dev grinned.
"You missed us?"
"Business was down."
Everyone laughed.
As they settled into their usual table...
Parth noticed Vaishnavi looked tired.
"Long day?"
She nodded.
"Very."
"The project is getting bigger every day."
Aarti smiled.
"Reyansh sir doesn't let anyone submit average work."
"But..."
She quickly added,
"...he works just as hard as the rest of us."
Vandana nodded.
"He never asks us to do something he wouldn't do himself."
Parth listened quietly.
Dev noticed.
"So..."
He asked Vaishnavi casually.
"How's Reyansh bhai outside meetings?"
Vaishnavi smiled.
"Very different."
"Different?"
"He jokes with everyone."
"He remembers everyone's names."
"And every Friday..."
She laughed softly.
"...he orders snacks for the whole team."
Dev whistled.
"Not bad."
Parth smiled politely.
"No..."
"Not bad at all."
The next evening...
The group decided to walk along Marine Drive after tea.
The breeze was stronger than usual.
Dark clouds gathered above the sea.
Aarti stretched her arms.
"I love this weather."
"So do I," Vandana replied.
Just then...
Vaishnavi's phone rang.
She answered.
"Hello?"
A smile appeared on her face.
"Yes, sir."
"We're nearby."
She listened for a few moments.
"Okay."
"We'll wait."
She ended the call.
"Who was it?" Aarti asked.
"Reyansh sir."
"He's nearby."
"He said he'll join us for a few minutes."
Parth looked towards the sea.
He didn't say anything.
Ten minutes later...
A black sedan stopped near the promenade.
Reyansh stepped out.
This time...
He wasn't wearing a formal suit.
Instead...
He was dressed in a simple navy-blue shirt and jeans.
Yet somehow...
He still looked effortlessly elegant.
He smiled as he approached.
"Hope I didn't keep everyone waiting."
"Not at all," Vaishnavi replied.
Dev stood up.
"Reyansh bhai!"
The cousins hugged.
"How's coaching?" Reyansh asked.
"So far..."
"We've survived."
Reyansh laughed.
"That's a good start."
Soon...
The six of them began walking together.
Reyansh asked Parth about his classes.
He offered tips about business presentations.
He even shared a few funny stories from his own college days.
Parth genuinely enjoyed listening to him.
There was no arrogance.
No showing off.
Just an elder brother sharing his experiences.
Vaishnavi watched the two cousins.
She smiled.
"You know..."
"They're nothing alike."
Aarti looked at her.
"What do you mean?"
She laughed softly.
"Reyansh is calm."
"Parth is..."
She looked at Parth, who was animatedly explaining something to Dev with exaggerated hand gestures.
"...Parth."
Everyone laughed.
Even Parth.
"I'll take that as a compliment."
"It is."
Vaishnavi smiled.
"I don't think anyone else could be you."
Those words made Parth smile.
For a brief moment...
The doubts in his heart disappeared.
As they prepared to leave...
Reyansh turned to Vaishnavi.
"Tomorrow's client presentation starts at nine."
"I'll pick you up on the way."
Vaishnavi nodded.
"Thank you, sir."
"No problem."
He smiled politely before leaving.
Parth watched the car disappear into the traffic.
Something felt different.
Not wrong.
Just...
Different.
He couldn't explain why.
Later that night...
As he lay in bed...
His thoughts drifted back to Marine Drive.
To the way Vaishnavi had smiled while talking about work.
To how naturally she and Reyansh discussed presentations, meetings and deadlines.
He sighed.
Dev, lying on the bed opposite him, looked over.
"You still awake?"
"Hmm."
"What are you thinking about?"
Parth stared at the ceiling for a long moment.
Then, with a faint smile, he said,
"Reyansh bhai and I grew up in the same family..."
"But sometimes..."
"It feels like we're from two completely different worlds."
Dev didn't reply immediately.
Because for the first time...
He understood that Parth's battle wasn't with Reyansh.
It was with his own self-doubt.
And that battle...
Had only just begun.
The Perfect Gentleman
The following Saturday...
The Mumbai Gang had made another plan.
This time...
It wasn't just evening tea.
Aarti had convinced everyone to visit an art and culture festival being held in Bandra.
"It's supposed to be amazing," she said excitedly.
"Food stalls."
"Live music."
"Handmade crafts."
"Photography exhibitions."
Dev's eyes sparkled.
"You had me at food stalls."
By six in the evening...
The five friends met outside the festival entrance.
Parth looked around.
"This place is huge."
Vandana smiled.
"Wait until you see the inside."
Just then...
A familiar voice called out.
"Looks like I arrived on time."
Everyone turned.
Reyansh walked towards them wearing a crisp white linen shirt and blue jeans.
He smiled warmly.
"I hope I'm not late."
"Perfect timing," Aarti replied.
Dev looked at Parth.
"Now the gang is complete."
The six of them entered together.
The festival was vibrant.
Strings of lights decorated every pathway.
Live musicians performed old Hindi classics.
Artists displayed paintings and sculptures.
Families wandered from stall to stall.
Vaishnavi stopped in front of a painting of Marine Drive at sunset.
"It's beautiful."
Reyansh stood beside her.
"The artist has captured the light perfectly."
They discussed the painting for a few minutes.
Meanwhile...
Parth stood at another stall pretending to look at handmade keychains.
Dev quietly walked over.
"You okay?"
Parth nodded.
"I'm fine."
"You've looked at the same keychain for five minutes."
Parth looked down.
"I have?"
"It doesn't even have a price tag."
Parth laughed awkwardly.
"Oops."
Dev smiled knowingly.
"Come on."
"They're just talking."
"I know."
A little later...
The group reached a crowded food street.
Every stall seemed busier than the last.
Aarti pointed excitedly.
"Pani puri!"
Dev immediately changed direction.
"I'm coming!"
The others followed.
The vendor handed everyone a plate.
Parth took one pani puri.
Bit into it.
Immediately began coughing.
"It's so spicy!"
Vaishnavi quickly handed him a bottle of water.
"Slowly!"
Parth took a few gulps.
"I'm okay."
Reyansh laughed.
"Still can't handle spicy food?"
Parth looked surprised.
"You remember?"
"You cried after eating green chilli pickle when you were eight."
Everyone burst into laughter.
Parth covered his face.
"Reyansh bhai!"
"You promised never to tell anyone."
"I promised no such thing."
Even Vaishnavi couldn't stop laughing.
"So you've always been like this?"
Parth sighed dramatically.
"Apparently."
As the evening continued...
The festival organized a small lucky draw.
The host called out,
"Would the gentleman in the blue shirt please come up?"
Parth looked behind him.
"There isn't anyone—"
Dev pushed him forward.
"That's you."
"I don't want to go."
"Too late."
The crowd applauded as Parth climbed onto the stage.
The host smiled.
"Congratulations!"
"You've won today's surprise prize."
"What is it?"
"A gift hamper."
Parth accepted it with a grin.
As he stepped off the stage...
He immediately walked towards the group.
Without even opening it...
He handed it to Vaishnavi.
"This is for you."
She looked surprised.
"What?"
"You won it."
"I know."
"So why are you giving it to me?"
Parth smiled sheepishly.
"I don't know."
"I just felt like it."
Before Vaishnavi could respond...
Reyansh spoke gently.
"Open it first."
Parth nodded.
"Right."
He opened the hamper.
Inside were chocolates...
A coffee mug...
And a small notebook with the words:
'Dream Big.'
Parth smiled.
Then looked at Vaishnavi again.
"I still think you should keep it."
She looked at him for a long moment.
Then smiled.
"Only if we share the chocolates."
"Deal."
Dev whispered to Aarti,
"He's gone."
"What?"
"Completely."
Aarti laughed softly.
"I noticed."
As they walked back towards the exit...
The streets had grown quieter.
The festival lights twinkled behind them.
Vaishnavi glanced at the notebook she was holding.
Then at Parth.
"You know..."
"Hmm?"
"You didn't have to give me this."
"I wanted to."
"Why?"
Parth smiled.
"Because seeing you happy..."
"...makes winning feel worthwhile."
Vaishnavi didn't know what to say.
She simply smiled.
From a distance...
Reyansh noticed the exchange.
His expression remained calm.
But for the very first time...
He looked at Parth...
Not just as his younger cousin.
But as someone whose feelings for Vaishnavi were becoming impossible to miss.
And somewhere deep inside...
A question quietly crossed his mind.
"Does Parth... love her?"
A Question Without an Answer
The festival slowly came to an end.
The six of them walked towards the parking area, still laughing about Dev's endless food adventures.
"I still can't believe," Aarti laughed, "you managed to eat at every single stall."
Dev looked offended.
"I skipped the Chinese stall."
"Only because it was closed," Vandana reminded him.
Everyone burst into laughter.
Outside the festival...
The group paused near the parking lot.
Reyansh checked his watch.
"I should get going."
"Big day tomorrow?" Vaishnavi asked.
He nodded.
"Early client meeting."
Then he looked at everyone.
"It was nice spending the evening with all of you."
Dev smiled.
"We should do this again."
"Definitely."
Reyansh's eyes finally rested on Parth.
"Can I borrow my cousin for a minute?"
Parth looked surprised.
"Me?"
"Just five minutes."
"Sure."
The others walked a little ahead while the two cousins remained behind.
For a few moments...Neither of them spoke.
They simply walked towards the sea.
Finally...
Reyansh smiled.
"So..."
"How's Mumbai treating you?"
Parth chuckled.
"It's growing on me."
"I can see that."
"You've made some good friends."
Parth nodded.
"I have."
Reyansh looked at him thoughtfully.
"You seem... happier."
"I am."
There was another brief silence.
Then Reyansh spoke again.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Of course."
"You like Vaishnavi, don't you?"
Parth stopped walking.
His heartbeat quickened.
He looked at Reyansh.
"What makes you say that?"
Reyansh smiled gently.
"I've known you since the day you were born."
"You become very easy to read whenever something matters to you."
Parth laughed softly.
"Am I that obvious?"
"A little."
Parth looked towards the sea.
The waves crashed against the rocks.
He smiled to himself.
"I don't know when it happened."
"But..."
"I can't stop thinking about her."
Reyansh listened quietly.
"I've never met anyone like her."
"She makes ordinary days feel special."
"And when she's around..."
He laughed softly.
"...I forget every problem I have."
Reyansh nodded.
"I understand."
Parth looked at him.
"You do?"
"I've been in your place once."
Parth smiled.
"So..."
"What do I do now?"
Reyansh placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
"If your feelings are genuine..."
"Don't hide them forever."
Parth looked surprised.
"You think I should tell her?"
Reyansh smiled.
"One day."
"But not because you're afraid of losing her."
"Tell her because she deserves to know."
Parth nodded slowly.
"I'll remember that."
Neither of them noticed...
Vaishnavi had turned around to see why they were taking so long.
From a distance...
She watched the two cousins talking.
Aarti smiled.
"They're really close."
Vaishnavi nodded.
"They are."
Vandana added,
"It's nice."
"You don't always see cousins sharing such a bond."
Vaishnavi smiled.
"I think Parth really looks up to Reyansh."
A few minutes later...
The two cousins rejoined the group.
"Everything okay?" Dev asked.
Reyansh smiled.
"Just catching up."
Parth nodded.
"We haven't met in a long time."
Reyansh looked at Vaishnavi.
"Take care of yourself."
"You've been working too hard."
She smiled.
"I will."
"And don't forget tomorrow's presentation."
"I've already prepared everything."
"I expected nothing less."
He smiled politely before walking towards his car.
As he drove away...
Parth watched the taillights disappear into the traffic.
He smiled.
For the first time...
He felt hopeful.
If even Reyansh believed he should confess...
Maybe...
Just maybe...
He wasn't dreaming the impossible.
Little did Parth know...
The coming days...
Would blur the line between friendship and love.
And every smile...
Every conversation...
Every shared moment with Vaishnavi...
Would make it harder and harder to guard his heart.
------
To be continued.
