Because playing both of them together as centre forwards would have weakened the midfield area, which Portugal couldn’t have afforded against Spain. Ronaldo played as a striker in this WC, not in his usual midfield role. Ramos can only play as a centre forward.

They had to go with 4-2-3-1 formation against Spain last night.
