Realized there is a lot of divided opinion on this show Seher Hone Ko Hai.
We have one group are loving the story and chemistry between the leads then we have another group who are bashing this show cause of underage marriage, and even using words like pedo and grooming.
So here is my take on this show. Am I liking this show? Yes! Am I loving the lead characters chemistry? YES! Am I supporting underage marriage?! No! Do I support pedos and grooming? HELL NO!!
But how is it possible I am loving a show that promotes things like underage marriage and grooming? First of all, there is one thing I want to say which many people won’t be comfortable to say. This show is showing the reality. I come across such stories often though I come from a liberal family like Dr Fareed’s. My mom has opposed such people to not get their girls marry so early and get them educated but most don't understand sadly. This is why I am able to relate to this show really well.
Yes this a common thing in quite some places especially in the rural areas in some countries.
I know quite some real life examples like Seher’s character where the girl is just 16 there but they fake her age in her ID and make her 18 so that she can get married without any legal mess. In Shariah laws, it is legal but in country wise laws marriage below 18 for girls is illegal. I have talked with many talented girls like Seher who was used to be very passionate about their dreams but they had to let it go once they get married. Also came across rare cases where they still fulfilled their dreams even after being married young and the husband being supportive and taking equal share of responsibilities of taking care of the house and children.
I wish more moms were like Kausar who would support their daughters on having a career and being self-independent over marriage. Things like education and self-independence are being taken very granted for. Kausar’s life is miserable cause of being in an abusive marriage and she can't even walk out cause of not being educated. Though sometimes Kausar overthink and tends to mess up due to lack of awareness about the outside world her intention is genuine. Her concerns are valid. Imagine if Mahid character was like Parvez, Seher’s life would have been a huge mess she won't have even been sitting for her paper.
Coming to Mahid’s character. To be honest, Mahid’s character I thought is the most complex and interesting in this show and is my fav after Kausar. He is also the most misunderstood character in this show by those who only watches the promos and judges. Mahid is neither a pedo nor he is involved in grooming. Though I find it really stupid that Mahid didn't ask Seher her age before they got married, but that's cause they want drama.
Mahid took a stand and stopped the marriage of a 15 yr old before he got married to Seher. He is completely against underage marriage. P.S Mahid is just 22 he is not some 35-40+ uncle like how some people are saying omg they have a huge age gap. Their age gap is just 6 that was never a problem. I feel not just Seher even Mahid is too young to be in a marriage.
Here in this show I liked how the husband of Seher is represented. They tried to show both sides in Mahid. One side where the husband wants his wife to just focus on household responsibilities while on other side husbands are supportive over their wife getting further education (unfortunately this side is still hard to find but not impossible to find). Mahid character is like he wants his wife to take care of the household but he is also not fully against her wanting to continue her education since his mom was educated too. He is not like the perfect husband but he is also not a trashy husband like Parvez either. He is flawed but he tries to understand the situation.
I don't think this show is encouraging underage marriage but yeah I do agree they tend to romanticize and needs to pause that till Seher is of legal age. The leads have a lovely chemistry which works both in favour and against the show. Favour cause you know it's like an eye candy and brings a smile, against cause we should not be rooting for a couple who is binded in underage marriage.
