No, by leaving his ending ambiguous I meant to say not showing him as alive or dead...Actually dead, if they wanted to end on a powerful note...What was the point of bringing him back which rarely happens in reality? What are they going to do with him now that he is a very popular figure with his face showing up on TV and what not? He can never take up another mission, unless he gets a dramatic facial plastic surgery....Also the Jamali twist in the end, though gave the kicks, wasn't quite necessary and didn't even make sense...I felt Dhar exchanged thrills for tight writing at several places...He compromised on the plot to squeeze in so much stuff but couldn't quite establish an emotional connect like he did with the part 1..The footage they showed at the end credits, should've been a part of the main screen time...May be all the killings could've been shown with the credit roll....For me, Ranveer Singh's amazing acting was the biggest draw...Arjun Rampal looked menacing in the first one but here his acting chops got exposed and became intolerable by the end. My biggest gripe is, there is no emotional connect....Music is not upto the standards the part 1 has set up, whereas it was my one of the biggest Draws for the D1. That one banger track they had- Aari Aari, was muffled up for the most part...
I think there’s multiple reasons why they avoided killing him. The most obvious is that it was too predictable; probably a lot of people anticipated this.
The next is that we actually can’t say for certain that all operatives who go undercover die. Ajit Doval has famously gone undercover and spied in Pakistan for 7 years and we know man is 80 years old or close to it. He’s also managed to become one of the most influential, powerful and well connected men on the planet.
Ambiguity about his status as alive or dead would be actually cheating the audience. This way they can speculate all they want and wonder for a long time what he’s doing next or will do next.
Death would also have meant a certain sense of peace and relaxation at the end of the day for his character. Here he’s more tormented than he was when he got the offer to become an undercover agent and that’s what makes his life a more sorry tale. The fact that he can’t even go back home, can’t have any happiness despite doing so much for his country, serving the nation… it’s a worse tragedy than his death would’ve been.
They have used a famous ghazal in this part which has the words - Gilla maut se nahi hai, mujhe zindagi ne maara.. the prequel ends with us learning his real name and the lyrics of the song are also similar - Naaz o andaaz se kehte hai ke jeena hoga, zeher bhi dete hai toh peena hoga….
Essentially his life is a curse and death would’ve been a blessing in disguise.
Killing him also perhaps closes the door on any possibility of future exploration of this character in say a continuation of the Dhurandhar Universe or maybe Aditya Dhar including him in some other patriotic movie wherein Ranveer can reprise his role again. He maybe considered famous enough in India Pakistan but that may not necessarily be the case everywhere, so we never know. Dhar has not closed the doors on what might be a future exploration of the character set in the same universe or another which is a pretty smart move.
For all we know Dhurandhar universe may continue with either prequel stories about Aalam or Jameel or a sequel with Rizwaan or even the character Yami had a cameo as in an OTT format announced in the future, along the lines of Marvel. Ranveer may be asked to drop by for a cameo appearance in the same if they do go there regardless of whether the show airs on Hotstar or Netflix.
