Modi Chalisa!!

A film made for the bhakts by a bhakt.

It's hard to believe this film is made by the same director who made part 1. It's Spyverse level stupid. Bro does whatever the f*ck he wants, whenever he wants. Everything is super convenient. Goes to Dubai, kills everyone one by one. Nobody bats an eyelid. Every character from Part 1..Ruined!! The menacing Major Iqbal turns into a Chappri who prefers hand to hand combat rather than killing the Mole when he has a chance. The Aura of SP Chaudhary is thrown down the gutter, turning him into an annoying clown. And Yelena goes from a badass chick to an abla nari who after finding out Hamza's secret is..."Oh that makes sense". The hyped "Bade Saab" is a vegetable who doesn't leave the bed.

The protagonists back story is ridiculous from a 90s potboiler, with families fighting over a piece of land. They could have easily tied this to the militant movement of Punjab and made Jaskirats mission personal. The music is a letdown, the BGM doesn't hit like the first part and the length is torturous. I won't even get into the In your face propaganda rather that the subtle one in the first part.

Forget twists and turns, the film doesn't even have a bend on the road. The only high point of the film is the interval block where Jaskirat comes across an old friend. Bedi being a RAW agent is another ridiculous and convenient narrative point. Bhai Minister bhi tumhara, ISI ka General bhi tumhara...why even send spys, pura Pakistan hi tumhara hai. 🤣

The first part was made by an Ace director, the second one is made by a bhakt who wants you to know that Demonetisation was an awesome thing, the Congress is sponsored by the ISI and Modi should be worshipped like him and his wife do.

The only constant is Ranveer Singh who lives both his characters and delivers his career best performance. If Dhurandhar was Sholay, this is RGV ki Aag. Tons of people in my show walked out before the film ended which is a shame because the post climax where Jaskirat is at his childhood home and stuck at the crossroads might have been the only "Peak Detailing by Dhar" in the whole film.

Rating: 1.5/5

I don't see the box office being anywhere close to the first one even with the monstrous start. People were watching D1 multiple times in theatres, this one is hard to sit through once.

The film is still getting great WOM, even if not on par with Pt 1. With the opening it has gotten and the long holiday period ahead with no competition and add to that the dubbed versions, there is no way D2 does not outgross D1!!! It will end up doing close to 400 cr domestic nett just in this extended weekend and week 1 alone, reaching the 800 cr plus domestic nett of D1 will be cake walk for it after that!!

Day 1 with paid previews is already about to cross 100 cr nett

Asli weekend toh kal se start hona hain

Hope so!!! Bollywood needs massive hits to restart the inflow of money/financiers that have deserted it for other industries.

Naa pehle palta tha, na ab paltunga. D1 was actually a good film, even if highly inspired by Tarantino & Scorsese. I gave it 4+ stars. This one is hard to sit through and extremely unrealistic with repetitive action. Even if it makes 2000 Cr, my opinion won't change.

I think the ending is ambiguous because we know he’s standing at a crossroads of sorts. He wants to go back home to be with his family but he’s aware that things are worse now than they were when the tragedy that led to him going on that rampage happened.

If he goes back now to his mom, sister and nephews may face fresh troubles courtesy of the fact that legally he’s supposed to be a convict who has been declared missing for over a decade. The case may get buried thanks to his connections and his service to the nation now but the people in his village who have memories of that whole incident will never forget what happened. Things may simmer up again if he’s back.

We aren’t sure if his sister married his friend or not but if she did - he has likely widowed her and orphaned his nephews involuntarily.

He’s not the same man he was when they last saw and met him. He’s changed as it’s inevitable and would it be appropriate for him to bring his darkness to his doorstep again? He knows that the ISI has links in Punjab and if he’s spotted by those linked with the network and they realise Hamza is Jaskirat then his family will have a larger target on their backs than ever possibly. A land dispute led to the ordeal that his parents and sisters suffered, he lost 2 family members in the process too. Now he’s got 2 new members, literally children to protect too.

The temptation is there but the reality is gruesome. Sanyal and his team can help Jaskirat but they can’t do everything possible to help him and his family. He also can’t expect his family to uproot their lives and leave everything they’ve ever known for his sake alone when he’s been a dead man to them more or less for more than 15 years now.

If he can’t go back to his home and goes back to the world outside, where does he go is the ambiguous situation. Does he return back to Sanyal’s team - does it mean donning a new identity all over again, some other place, new players all over again? He did this once and ended up killing someone he likely considered a friend to spare him the ordeal of torture, killed a friend involuntarily, ended up falling in love and giving her up as well as his child. Does he have it in him to do this all over again if it’s required?

Does he go under the radar, if they will even allow him to do so? Where does he go from here? He’s lost and that’s his tragedy. It’s a bleak road up ahead for him no matter what.

Go back to family and doom them for his own happiness, don another identity somewhere else (possibly in India or even abroad) or go under the radar but even that would mean being vigilant always, on the lookout 24/7/365 as he could make one mistake and be discovered by Sanyal again.

Does he kill himself because his mind is a mess and he has lost even more of himself than he ever knew was possible.

His presumed death/disappearance has assured his mother gets a monthly stipend from the government.. a measly amount of 1000 a day for a month adding up to 30K. His mom would prefer a son back over that amount any day but would he be able to provide even that much for his family if he’s constantly hunted and hunting?!

The saddest part is he might be better off dead to the family than alive; he might die a little on the inside every day he thinks of that no matter where he goes from here or who he becomes - on his own or as an agent again to serve the nation which wouldn’t even honour him in his death as he wore no uniform but was as much a soldier as anyone who dons one regardless of its colour.

No, by leaving his ending ambiguous I meant to say not showing him as alive or dead...Actually dead, if they wanted to end on a powerful note...What was the point of bringing him back which rarely happens in reality? What are they going to do with him now that he is a very popular figure with his face showing up on TV and what not? He can never take up another mission, unless he gets a dramatic facial plastic surgery....Also the Jamali twist in the end, though gave the kicks, wasn't quite necessary and didn't even make sense...I felt Dhar exchanged thrills for tight writing at several places...He compromised on the plot to squeeze in so much stuff but couldn't quite establish an emotional connect like he did with the part 1..The footage they showed at the end credits, should've been a part of the main screen time...May be all the killings could've been shown with the credit roll....For me, Ranveer Singh's amazing acting was the biggest draw...Arjun Rampal looked menacing in the first one but here his acting chops got exposed and became intolerable by the end. My biggest gripe is, there is no emotional connect....Music is not upto the standards the part 1 has set up, whereas it was my one of the biggest Draws for the D1. That one banger track they had- Aari Aari, was muffled up for the most part...

Actually that part about agents not returning is untrue...heck even Doval was undercover in Pakistan for years and then went on to head the agency. Not every undercover field agent dies you know, and many do occupy official posts, if they are back home, off the field!!!

I mean the famed Mohit Sharma also returned back after being undercover with Hizbul Mujahideen and his death did not happen while on field undercover in Pakistan but later on the border while fighting for the Indian Army in uniform.
