Key Player Watch: Markram vs Santner

Aiden Markram (268 runs, 175 SR) has been the best batter of the tournament so far. However, he faces his ultimate test in Mitchell Santner, whose clever changes of pace on this Kolkata deck will be New Zealand’s primary weapon. Keep an eye on Lungi Ngidi, who has been a “thorn in the flesh” for openers with 12 wickets in 6 games.

What's the latest on weather and pitch?

The atmosphere in Kolkata is electric, but it’s also undeniably heavy. Current conditions at Eden Gardens show a temperature of around 29 Degrees Celsius with humidity at 24%. While there is 0% chance of rain tonight, the real factor will be the evening dew.

Curator reports suggest a paradise for batters with an average first-innings score of 182 this tournament. However, if the dew kicks in by 8:30 PM, the spinners, including New Zealand’s Mitchell Santner and SA’s Keshav Maharaj, might struggle to grip the ball, making the toss absolutely vital.

Historically, chasing at Eden Gardens under lights is the preferred route during the T20 World Cup.

It could've been Pakistan. It could've been a hastily-arranged trip to Colombo. But the situation changed, equations flipped and South Africa arrived in Kolkata instead. You could argue a free-flowing batting side like South Africa would be happier to be in the vicinity of a true surface with a fast outfield and loads of runs, rather than Colombo where square boundaries are big, and spinners are happy.

Their opponents New Zealand might not share that sentiment after spending the last 10-odd days in Colombo. But they'll be glad it's them and not Pakistan making up the top-four despite their campaign lacking spark and conviction. That however, is not for them to dwell on anymore. A big opposition awaits them, but as does a blank slate and an equal chance to get to the summit. Mitchell Santner could very well use the narrative of being imperfect to tell his players that the only way from here, as far as they're concerned, should be upward.

What's the idea that Aiden Markram could propagate in his dressing room - full of confident players with seven wins on the bounce? Perhaps to not read too much into South Africa's checkered history with World Cup knockouts. He could believe that all of it is just a lazy narrative, and he wouldn't be wrong. Just two years ago, South Africa absolutely demolished Afghanistan in this very fixture before falling at the last hurdle against India.

The South African cricket team will look to maintain their perfect record at the T20 World Cup 2026 when they face New Zealand in the first semi-final at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday.

The SA vs NZ semi-final also carries a lot of historical weight on two teams as they eye their maiden T20 World Cup title.

While this will be South Africa’s fourth T20 World Cup semi-final, for New Zealand it will be their fifth appearance in the final four.

The Proteas’ best finish came in 2024, when they reached the final before losing to India, while New Zealand’s finest run remains their runners-up finish in 2021.

The two sides have already crossed paths once in this edition, with the Proteas chasing down 175 in just 17.1 overs for a seven-wicket win in Group D.

In the Super 8, South Africa - fifth in the T20I rankings - topped Group 1 with victories over India, the West Indies and Zimbabwe, stretching their winning streak at this edition to seven.

New Zealand, ranked fourth, squeezed through from Super 8 Group 2 in second spot courtesy of a better Net Run Rate (NRR) than Pakistan.

After a washout against Pakistan, they beat Sri Lanka convincingly before losing narrowly to England. In the end, a superior NRR ensured the Black Caps claimed a spot in the semi-finals.

Aiden Markram (268 runs) has been South Africa’s standout batter so far with an average of 53.60 and a strike rate of 175.16, while Lungi Ngidi has impressed with 12 wickets at an economy of 6.87.

For New Zealand, Tim Seifert has been in standout form with 216 runs. Rachin Ravindra, with nine wickets from seven matches, leads New Zealand’s bowling charts.

South Africa hold the advantage with 12 wins from 19 T20Is, while New Zealand have won seven. The Proteas are also unbeaten against the Black Caps at T20 World Cups, winning all five meetings.

In their encounter earlier in the ongoing edition of the T20 World Cup, Mark Chapman’s 48 off 26 helped New Zealand post 175/7, with Marco Jansen returning with figures of 4/40. South Africa’s chase was powered by Markram’s unbeaten 86 off 44, guiding his team to victory with 17 balls to spare.
