Kareena's solo movie (The Buckingham Murders) hadn't much traction, either (albeit not a bad movie & not a bad performance). Jaana Jaan (also a thriller) released directly on OTT. Considering that Indian audience rarely flocks to the theatres for a one-woman lead movie - and crime/thriller/action genre especially - even a boxoffice relative low is laudable.

In a female led Thriller genre, the past few years we've had - The Buckingham Murders starring Kareena Kapoor which couldn't even cross 10 Crs Net lifetime while the Kajol led Maa did 37 Crs( A success).

Mardaani 3 is trending slighty better than Maa and should finish close to 40 Cr, making it an easy SUCCESS for everyone involved.

Sonam was coming off Neerja and a National award and was a bigger star than Kareena and so were Kriti/Tabu in Crew. Not to mention Diljit and the chart buster music of both the films.

Kareena had never carried anything on her shoulders.

And ONCE again nobody knows budgets and Mardaani 3 is not a "Masala" film lol. It's a dark and gritty thriller.

You're right, one shouldn't compare them. I only mentioned it because it is an example of a movie Kareena 'carried on her shoulders' (like she did in Jaane Jaan). It has nothing to do with successful at the boxoffice or not - at least to me
