bold: I would like to ask what members think what patriotism mean... but that should be a question asked at another place, I guess.
I asked how Google would define patriotism and interestingly the answer mostly reflects my own thinking... here some parts I would like a l l nations/countries would respect more than they do because, actually, to me it's all about emotional attatchment and positive activities...However, unfortunately, patriotism is something very fragile - exactly because of the emotional part.
I see patriotism as
- based on positive values (human rights) rather than superiority over others.
- taking responsibility which includes constructive criticism, engagement and reminding my country-fellows to hold to the ideals stated in the constitution.
- supporting the community contributing in whichever way to the betterment in and of the community (apart from waving the flag)
I strongly distinct patriotism from nationalism... the love for the country should n o t result in blind loyality, feelings of superiority and also not in hostility toward other nations. In my mind, patriotism is some of the positive -ism concepts while the other one belongs to the negative ones.
