Because everything is corporatised now, even movies. The corporate people want to ensure that they have their money’s worth and think they should take no chances regarding their investments. Which is why this whole nonsense of movie promotions is going crazier and worse than before.
Aamir Khan gave haircuts to people to promote his movie, there’s this guy Harshvardhan Rane whose latest movie has cringy promotional campaign too. He did a dharna outside the office/home of the producer of his previous movie to make it have a re-release.
Kinda why everyone was shocked that Dhurandhar was literally not promoted the way it was expected from a movie with such a stellar cast of popular actors; and many of them were working together for the first time. It was the first movie of the entire mainstream cast members with Aditya Dhar. That’s why there were so many rumours too. But Dhurandhar has flipped the script! The word of mouth and the negative publicity helped it become this gigantic blockbuster. The political leanings of the movie aren’t even remotely the reason for its success - the script, performances, the characters, music, direction, perfect casting and using real studios as well as actual locations instead of just green screen is. You can hate the movie based on your political beliefs but you can’t deny its finesse in execution or find fault in its technical aspects in a single department if you tried.
That kind of vision and belief is unseen and unheard of nowadays which is why it’s a phenomenon that’s an anomaly while simultaneously being a trendsetter rolled into one.
People have high expectations and excitement for part 2 already and for Bollywood it’s a literal first, for Pan India; this is only the second time after Bahubaali that such a buzz is even surrounding a movie.
Hopefully, Dhurandhar changes things for the better in all these aspects as a veteran like Ram Gopal Verma is predicting.
