Their scenes are truly good.
I am really looking forward to how they’re gonna develop these two characters in the next movie. I think they will recreate the scene we saw in Gehra Hua, the one where he sneaks into her room and she picks up his gun and points it at him. That scene was not added randomly, it’s a clever foreshadowing of how it will play out again in the future when Yalina discovers the truth about Hamza. I really wanna see how they recreate it and more specifically what they have him do, how he handles her anger.
For a spy thriller with a very limited screen-time for female characters, I like how nuanced the relationships are written. There are 3 couples in the movie - Rehman and his wife Ulfat, Hamza and Yalina, finally Yalina’s parents. The least screen time is for the parents but we see them function as a unit when it comes to their daughter, though we don’t see much of them.
The primary focus is on Akshay and Ranveer as characters; and we see them handling their partners in their moments of anger so well. When his wife slaps him in the hospital Rehman doesn’t react, simply takes her face in his hand and hugs her softly murmuring Meri Jaan. A lot of people make fun of that scene by saying that no matter who you are when it comes to wife everyone gets intimidated but that’s not the case here. Rehman doesn’t see his wife there slapping him but a mother who has lost her child. Both of them know that their child’s killers won’t be spared, but they even know that the only one among the two who will have the satisfaction of punishing their culprits personally will be Rehman, as we see happening eventually. He doesn’t spare his alleged father for getting his son killed. Ulfat however would never have that satisfaction of personally avenging her child; even though her loss, her rage, her pain is no less than that of Rehman. The only person she can physically punish to get some sort of release of her anger is her husband, the father of her child and also unfortunately, the man responsible for the death of their child as this was his war, his enmity that led them here. He takes the slap because he understands his wife’s mourning their child; he can’t do anything to help her but he can let her have this. Aditya gave them this in their introduction itself and then we see how Rehman keeps kissing his wife’s forehead often.
So I am really curious to see what happens when Yalina eventually finds out that Hamza is a spy and she’s bound to believe that he faked his love for her though that may not be true necessarily. I think he genuinely loves her even if he may have intentionally set out to woo her with a goal in mind of getting close to her father via her. Their two scenes give that away - one where he’s drunk and comes back home after 26/11 post talking with Aalam on that bridge. She’s angry and he has just been devastated but he doesn’t take it out on her, let’s her yell at him even understands her anger is concern and also jealousy because she presumes he might have been with another girl, he tells her he wants to rule Lyari never explaining himself, never answering her questions; he asks her to never question him ever again or leave him but also promises her if she stays he promises her that he’ll solely be hers only. He doesn’t have to promise her that, not in a society where a man is allowed to have multiple wives and well, men all over the world are not above cheating but he promises her his loyalty - that’s not required for his mission as a spy but his personal call. In the end too we see him coming home to her, he tells her he’s hungry and then as she feeds him, he breaks down as the weight of the experience of that day finally hits him - he’s achieved his first success, he’s avenged his people in some way even if partly but there’s still a lot to do and a long way to go but this much itself was so exhausting and he allows himself the opportunity to cry to feel lighter and he doesn’t hesitate to do it in front of her. He allows himself to be vulnerable only in front of her even though he doesn’t explain himself. So I really wanna see what happens with them next. Fingers crossed, Aditya gives them and by extension, us as viewers, something good.
