He kidnapped but never touched her as per information we have been fed since childhood, and it was mentioned also . Even in many parts of Country Ravana is worshipped on vijayadashmi as he was considered gyani and some believe system respect certain traits of him . His only mistake was that he abducted Sita.

actually my bad , shouldn’t have used the context / compared with Ravana . Evil is evil if done slightest also.

Ravana didn't touch Sita or forced her coz he was scared of curse not because of any maryada... I think vedavati had cursed Ravana. She was a maiden and was performing penance to marry Lord vishnu and Ravana tried to molest her. She cursed him stating if he ever attempts to force himself on a woman, his head would split into pieces and die instantly and she immolated herself... She vowed to be reborn and become the cause of his destruction and some texts suggests she was reborn as Sita.......this is not mentioned in valmiki ramayana but in padma purana I guess.

Even Valmiki ramayana mentions similar curse but here Ravana assaults Rambha while going to meet Nalakubera and enraged Nalakubera pronounced a curse on Ravana that if he ever force a woman his head would shatter in pieces and he would die instantly.

However in either version we can see he was cursed and he feared his death hence he tried to persuade sita and didn't force himself on her...And with this it becomes clear that if he was not cursed then he would have abducted/molested other woman.

And also I dont agree that his only mistake was sita's abduction, according to Valmiki ramayana he committed other atrocities too like molesting rambha, he harassed sages which is nothing but adharma, he misused his powers to terrorize other kingdoms and he believed he is invincible ignoring dharma and forgetting that everyone will get back their karma disrupting the natural order and principles of universe.

Raavana was a gyaani but gyaani doesn't mean he can walk on path of adharma...almost every asura killed by Mahavatar was gyaani but they were punished because they didn't follow path of dharma...they misused there powers and knowledge and committed atrocities...
