Unnamed and unknowable thoughts-32
Guna's story -32
"When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure."
The idiom "circling the drain" refers to something or someone nearing completion, failure, or death. The phrase is a visual metaphor, comparing the swirling motion of water draining from a sink to a person, project, or idea nearing its end. It suggests a rapid decline with little hope of recovery.
In life, at many a time, we all find ourselves becoming a perfect example for the above-mentioned idiom " Circling the drain ".
For example, take a married couple who, after a few years, begin to see the cracks of incompatibility between them is now a vast chasm and a deep abyss. Life becomes painful, and at one point, they decide that they have to sit and talk and work out what to do or what not to do.
The time spent in realising and recognising the problem before dealing with it is, in my humble opinion a sort of " Circling the drain " situation.
Sadly, many prefer to run around in circles rather than confront their problems and constant sorrow.
I, don't have a problem with life, for I prefer to crash-land or gatecrash into the problem head first or heels first and handle it as soon as possible.
Saritha who had until then circled around the situation concerning their mother Anjali who had been admitted in the Apollo CCU, Teynampet, waited until she had crested the chetpet bridge and once they were heading down, asked, ' How are you going to....' and suddenly realising that she could not bring herself to finish her question, turned away from Guna who after a few seconds of contemplation, answered and at the same time completed her questions.
Turning slightly to my right, I mumbled, 'Baby, life is like a bridge. If we go up, we have to come down. It does not matter how high we go, but in the end, we have to come down. We fall... It's just that.'
Smiling sadly, Saritha completed him, ' it's just that the fall can be fatal or life-threatening sometimes. Like this time..illiya Guna.'
' It is not just about me, Saritha, what about you, da? how are you and Appa going to cope when Amma leaves us.'
Her body tried hard to dam the blinding pain that took hold of her, but failed miserably. She tried to rid herself of her angst and rage by clenching the steering wheel hard, but her eyes failed her, and they opened their gates to let out a rain of tears.
I wanted to, but did not for nothing I said or did would have helped. I let her cry, for sometimes crying serves as a kind of healing balm. Even though, temporary by nature.
Wiping her tears, she asked me, ' Guna, what about New York and Europe? We read about all those experimental stuff happening all over the world. Why not use your contacts and try getting her into one of those programmes? Surely, they must be several steps ahead of us when it comes to treating cancer.
' I did that the moment Appa called me to inform me that the cancer had returned and had spread. All the doctors that I contacted came back with one reply. Too late. Although some of them did say that they could try and buy her some time but then she will have to go through a lot of procedures and sadly, pain.'
Slamming both her hands on the steering wheel, Saritha screamed, ' I don't get this at all, Guna. I don't understand why God has to mess with us like this.'
Then, unable to take Guna's silence any longer, she yelled at him, ' Say something. Please, talk to me. I am feeling very lost right now.'
Placing his hand on hers and gripping it, ' I am sorry, but I have no answers. No words with which I could console you. Nothing I say will help right now. The sad part is that we all have each other, and yet this is something that we have to suffer on our own. In our own strange and unique ways.'
Grief is not a disorder, a disease or a sign of weakness. It is an emotional, physical and spiritual necessity, the price you pay for love. The only cure for grief is to grieve.
