India can go on the hunt once more with the second new ball when play begins tomorrow. They were superb in using these brief windows with the new ball at Edgbaston, and will hope to do that once more over here. While Root is looking solid as ever, Stokes seems to be battling a groin issue. Let's see how things turn out on Day 2. Until then, it's goodbye!

Stats summary of day 1:
-- 251/4 is the fewest aggregate by England on the first day's play in Bazball era where they were not bowled out. Their scoring rate of 3.02 is the second lowest for them in a day's play in this period where they batted at least 50 overs, behind 2.69 (145 in 53.5 overs) on day 3 in Ranchi in 2024.
-- Joe Root - 18th batter overall and sixth for England to remain unbeaten on 99 overnight. Each of the 17 previous batters reached three figures the following day.

The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy currently stands at level terms 1-1, and both teams are looking to gain a significant advantage by winning the third Test of the five-match series. England won the series opener by five wickets as the hosts chased down more than 370. No one gave India a chance of levelling the series at Edgbaston, considering Jasprit Bumrah was given a rest owing to workload management. However, Shubman Gill led from the front as he aggregated 430 runs, truly putting in a Player of the Match performance.

Joe Root is stranded on 99*!

You could see it coming from a mile away at the start of the over! With Root on 96*, he picks up a double and then is held up with a single by a mischievous Ravindra Jadeja, who eggs him on to come back for a second. Wry smile on Root's face, and Stokes can't turn the strike over to him.

Joe Root didn't score a mass of boundaries in the evening session as he worked his way up to his 191-ball 99.

Day 2, 10.15am local, 2.45pm IST: Good morning everyone on what is another sunny and hot day in London! It was a bizarre opening day at Lord's yesterday, even without taking into account how play was halted for a few moments by a swarm of ladybirds. England opted to bat first, which in itself was a rarity under Ben Stokes, and then they scored at just three an over for the whole day. The lack of pace in the pitch was a big contributing factor, and the hosts needed to bide their time rather than go on the attack. Who better to do that than Joe Root? England's greatest ever batter led the way with a knock of high quality and control.

India, for their part, kept things tight and didn't allow the game to get away before the second new ball. It helped to a great extent that Nitish Reddy stepped up with the ball and produced a performance which saw him extract the most swing and seam among Indian bowlers while hitting good areas. He picked up the first two wickets to fall, while the other two were shared by Bumrah and Jadeja. There were signs of inconsistent bounce and turn - let's see how that evolves going forward.

Rishabh Pant insights: "He's out there and tried to take a couple of balls but didn't look comfortable," says Kaushik. "He's just milling about holding his bat in the non-injured hand. Doesn't look good at the moment."
