Shreyas Iyer has been in magnificent form in IPL 2025. He has been equally destructive against spinners and pacers. In 12 matches, he has amassed 435 runs at an average of 48.33 and a strike rate of 174.70. The PBKS captain dropped himself down to No. 5 in the last game against the Rajasthan Royals. It will be interesting to see where he bats on Saturday.

Arshdeep Singh had a forgettable outing against the Royals in the last game, conceding 60 runs in his four overs without picking up a wicket. The PBKS seamer tends to go for runs in some matches, but bounces back strongly every time. This season, he has bagged 16 wickets from 12 games at an average of 21.94. He will have a crucial role to play against the Capitals.

When this game first began two weeks ago, it soon found itself interrupted as a blackout in Dharamsala forced play to stop. Now, the ten overs of play from that day are scratched out, and as Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals' prepare for a game in Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh Stadium instead, as is much of the jeopardy gone.

Delhi Capitals’ torrid run of form, which has seen them fail to win in 5 matches, saw them bounced out of the tournament as they were demolished on their trip to the Wankhede Stadium, despite being the best team in the first part of this tournament. Punjab Kings, meanwhile, are now odds-on favourites to finish in the top two as their primary rivals for those positions dropped points in the last two games. With this the second of their three consecutive matches in Jaipur, they remain favourites to see off a low-confidence DC and put themselves in pole to participate in qualifier one.

A win today will see Punjab Kings vault to the top of the IPL 2025 table, on 19 points and on equal games played as the other three playoff-bound teams. Crucially, with qualification in the bag, it allows the team to get some preparation in against a playoff-calibre team: the earliness of qualification means that the gulf in quality between the top and bottom of the table has been large, but DC are a well-rounded and capable team who haven’t played to potential in these recent weeks. Punjab and Delhi last faced off in their respective opening games of the IPL 2024 season, and it would be PBKS running out victors in their first ever game at the new PCA Stadium in Mullanpur. One team unbeaten in 4, against another winless in 5. Surely this only goes one way? After starting their season 6-2 and having an 86% chance of qualifying as per statistical estimates, Delhi have lost 4 and gotten away with a no-result in their last 5 games, and looked nowhere close to winning in several of those.

It has been a head-scratcher, with not too much changing. But a lack of consistency and reliability particularly in the top order has been a root concern throughout this miserable run going back a month.

DC's season over, but winning record at stake

Delhi Capitals haven't had a season where they've had more wins than losses since 2021. In two of the last three years, they finished with an even record. The team will feel it is far too good to regress, especially after the start they had. They will want to be one of the teams who can claim to have won more often than they lost, with that fact capable of providing serious momentum in 2026.

It was quite the opposite story for DC. In a must-win game, the capital team played terrifically for 18 overs to limit MI at the Wankhede. After that, it fell apart. Momentum swung MI's way with 48 runs off the last two overs, and DC never recovered as early wickets and a middle order collapse against spin left them reeling.

DC's manner of defeat in their two games since the resumption will be what disappoints the players and fans the most, not meeting their own standard through the tournament at all.
