Hello awesome readers,

As some of you may have noted, we were talking about the idea of doing Buddy reads or Read-alongs (at a slower pace) which basically means - you’re reading what you want to, you just find someone to team up with to read it with you which can make the process double the fun! Not only can it motivate you to keep up your reading & improve your pace, but it can also help you finish a book that you might have DNFed & enrich your reading experience with the discussions you’ll have with your buddies while reading.

This thread is to facilitate this for whoever is interested in connecting for a potential Buddy Read!

How will this work?

Buddy reads can be just 2 people or more, number doesn’t matter. All you need to do is agree to read the same book within the given predetermined time.

Obviously the pace will have to be decided among the members of the Buddy reading team. If you’re one of those that read at breakneck speed, you might have to slow down a bit to let your reading buddies catch up. You can decide if you want to do a chapter a day or more. Depends entirely on the people involved. You make up the rules for your Buddy read - when to start, when to finish etc etc

Once you find someone, post the book you’re reading, tag me and let me know who your reading buddies will be. One of you can then open a new thread dedicated to the book you’re reading.

Others please note: the thread will NOT be spoiler free. So if the book in question is something that interests you or will likely read in the future, and you don’t want to be spoiled, please don’t venture into the thread!

If you’re participating in the Reading challenge, your Buddy read book can most certainly be a part of your log (you might want to adjust your reading pace accordingly if you want to log the entire book in May)

Fanfics are obviously also allowed - just make sure you’re not reading only OSs and stick to the longer ones.

Any language/ any genre of books are okay- as long as the people involved are okay with it.

Just note that the discussions will need to follow IF CoC as regards explicit content/ language etc.

I’m not going to be involved (unless I’m part of the Buddy read). This thread is just to facilitate teaming up with your potential reading buddy.

You can absolutely schedule a Buddy read (if you do not want to get into right away). Just let me know the time frame.

Remember you will need to be flexible and adjust your reading pace to match your buddies. Which means those who are accustomed to faster reading speeds will need to be willing to keep reading other books alongside, and stick to one chapter a day (or whatever the team decides is going to be your pace for the Buddy Read).

You can also read ahead, make notes and join the discussion when your buddies catch up. But Read-Alongs/ Buddy reads are typically more fun when you read the same portions simultaneously (like a chapter a day) and discuss them as you go along. It’s different from reading the entire book and then discussing it as a whole. It allows you to be in the moment, take longer to process and absorb the book, react, theorize, speculate & discuss what appealed to you and what did not & compare notes & highlights.

Also note: Getting hold of the book is your own responsibility. Please don't share pirated links or other illegal links on here

If there are any questions, comments, suggestions, go ahead and post them on here and we'll figure it out together.

For those who are ready to get started, post your TBR here and tag whoever you want to, but note that this is open to anyone who wants to read the same book.

FAQs

(for any queries you may have)

  1. Do we have to read one chapter a day?

No. the Rules are totally up to you and have to be mutually agreed on among all the participants.

You don’t have to do one chapter or few chapters a day- you can decide to finish the whole book and then discuss it. It’s totally up to you how you want to do it. The first post just contains suggestions highlighting how a Read-along usually works. Read-alongs typically mean that you all read 1-2 chapters or a small portion of the book, discuss it, read some more, discuss that and so on till you get to the end.

The other way of doing it - if you find that reading pace is too different amongst you all and you don’t want to tweak your own reading to match the others - is you can choose to each read as you see fit, and then come back at the end to discuss the book. It just means that you all are reading the book in roughly the same time frame. And when you’re done (by a specific end-date that you all agree to) you can then post discussion Qs on the whole book, and discuss it as a whole.

You also don’t need to have daily reading goals for a book such as a chapter a day. You can instead set a goal like everyone finishes upto chapter 10 by the end of 1 week and then you can can discuss upto that point.

The rules are totally up to you, just make sure you all are comfortable with whatever is decided.

I don't maintain a Goodreads TBR. Most of the times, I just pick anything random that comes on my Instagram feed.

So, if anyone is planning to read a simple (in terms of writing) romcom without smut, I can join in smiley9

I don't really know how buddy reads and read alongs work. I never did them before. I obviously heard about buddy reads. I think it means two people will read a book at a same time and discuss the book with each other. But as far as read along is concerned, I don't know what that is. I don't think the type of books I read other people will be interested in them. Many of them are children's fiction. And here my other participants don't really read children's fiction that much. Horror is my favourite genre. I enjoy reading horror books. But horror is a genre which is disliked by many people. I read Japanese books too and most of the other participants don't read them. Yes, I like to read thriller and fantasy too. But I read low-fantasy books mostly. And as far as thrillers are concerned, there're some sub-genres. Other participants may not feel interested in the sub-genres I read.
