NO appeal needed. If a batsman thinks he is out after a delivery he can walk. Appeal is only needed for umpire to give out. Umpire CANNOT give out without appeal no matter how big an edge that is or how plumb is the lbw.
I don't remember in which match but there was an incident where a ball was hit deep and fielder caught it close to ground and threw the ball in anger, none of his team appealed thinking he dropped it and ump didn't give it out, after 10 seconds the catch taking fielder comes running and says I took the catch, I took the catch. Then 3rd ump was called and catch was given. All because No one from his team appealed.
