I doubt its that easy to fall in love. I feel Aishwarya was very shrewd. She was at a very vulnerable phase in her personal life wherein the whole Salman-Vivek episode & then losing out movies and friendships in BW affected her. She wanted a powerful family. She was looking for her safety and security. Abhishek was a eligible bachelor who had just done movies like Yuva, Bluffmaster, Dhoom, Bunty Babli, Sarkar and audience were considering him to be the next Superstar after Guru. But then his career just went downhill.

I agree, it was like a 'mistake' to trust the director (wasn't it the only movie he directed?).

I disagree. By the time Umrao Jaan came around Aishwarya was more or less past her vulnerable phase. And her brand value internationally was picking up. Umrao Jaan wasn’t a small movie, on paper at least, and she also got Dhoom2 and Guru around the same time.

Sometimes it is easy to fall in love. Abhishek was a nice chill dude back then. And funny. That was the most common thing his costars talked about him all the time. He was an all around easy going funny guy. He made her laugh and treated her like a normal person as opposed to his property or his porcelain doll trophy. It’s sad that things seem so different now, but I do think they were in love then.

According to Google he’s directed a couple more, last one being in 2013. He apparently also directed Abhishek in Bas Itna Se Khwab Hai, which was another flop but not nearly as much of a bad movie as Drona.

I wonder what Goldie Behl does these days?

Drona was his only theatrical release (as far as I know)...he did something for TV and OTT (didn't watch none of that)

Abhishek has been getting a lot of hate because of Abhi-Ash divorce rumors and successful defamation campaign against Bachchans by Bahurani's PR. Abhishek is being belitted that he doesn't deserve Aishwarya Rai, that Aishwarya is too good for him, and that he is insecure of Ash. Bachchans are getting hate because according to Ash fans they're lucky to have Aishwarya in their family and that legendary megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who is the biggest superstar India has even seen, is relevant today because Ash is his daughter-in-law.

However, this was not the case when Aishwarya married Abhishek in 2007. The entire industry and the country was shocked when Amitabh decided to get Abhishek engaged to Aishwarya.

The article talks about all the controversies surrounding their marriage because of Ash being older than Abhishek, that she brings bad luck to her boyfriends, and her controversial reputation due to her highly publicized relationships with Salman and Vivek.

Everybody - be it fans, media or family members - were against their marriage because of Aishwarya's flings in the past and the myth that she brings bad omen for her boyfriends. They warned Abhishek 'if you marry her your career will be ruined' and insisted that she is very unlucky.

Controversial reputation ? Because she had dated two guys in the past ? What exactly was so controversial about it? Maybe dating before marriage was frowned upon in general in India back then but it was pretty common among celebs . Aishwarya's ' reputation ' was nowhere as controversial as womaniser cum pervert Amitabh's who had been groping young women and having affairs. If anybody was offended by this marriage it should have been her parents. The bringing bad luck part is just garden variety misogyny.
